GuestSelected cities as in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto.
It’s on 1 screen here in Toronto. Packed when I saw it on Thursday night.

GuestYeah, Pammy, tell me about it: good ol’ Nebraska doesn’t get ANYTHING until it’s gone through the more populous areas first. We get a lot of dribblers…

GuestWell, I’m in Ohio, and I know someone who got a sneak preview for the 17th. Now, if only I can find her and grab it and run….

GuestReally? I heard it’s coming to KC on the 24th and that’s what AMC’s been advertising (AMC is based here in Kansas City, MO). So, is this like a “paper launch” of the movie? It’s out but it’s really not? Is this JUST so they don’t compete with ROTK?

GuestHahaha! I found her, and I grabbed the tickets and ran! (Or, my friend knew someone who won free tickets to a sneak preview, and got them for us. Either way. I went, I saw, and it was saucy)!

GuestIf anything, you KNOW someone has pirated it already…just pick up a copy at your local mom & pop video store…

GuestTumbleweed — tisk, tisk, tisk.

But anyway, yes, there are movies every year that open in big cities first, then move to the rest of America. Sometimes, if there is not bulk appeal, the movie NEVER moves out to the rest of America (2002’s “Nicholas Nickleby”, for one, which I was looking forward to immensely but had to wait for video).
But I don’t think we have to worry about “Big Fish” NOT having appeal…I can think of a large community of Burton/Elfman fans who would storm Sony Studios in riotous protest if the studio chose not to release it to “the little people.”

GuestBIG FISH is getting a “platform” release. The studio releases it in key markets first, to build word of mouth, then slowly opens the film on more screens in the following weeks. It helps smaller movies get noticed, instead of dumping them in theaters and getting lost.
