ParticipantI don’t know what happens between british movie and music press and Danny Elfman: a while ago, I remember a review of the “Hulk” soundtrack where an “Uncut” writer called Elfman “a multiplex hack” or something; now, “Empire” magazine, speaking about the “A Series of Unfortunate Events” soundtrack by Thomas Newman says “Newman opts for something far more daring than Hollywood’s usual Elfman-esque kiddie fantasy stylings”. Well, maybe they are attacking Elfman’s imitators and not the man himself…

ParticipantI saw a review of “Haunted Mansion” a while back and I remember the critic in the Boston Globe describing Mark Mancina’s average score as “Elfman-esque.” He’s a big name in Hollywood, not liked by all due to his unique style and the number of good films he’s scored. Critics love the little scores, I suppose.

KeymasterWell, to be fair to the critic, HAUNTED MANSION is very Elfman-esque. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS was temped in for the main titles specifically.
And as for the British film magazines… Well, they’re British, so who gives a fuck anyways, right? LOL

ParticipantCritics prefer composers “à la John Williams”. Elfman ‘s scores are a different sound. And, Danny is too excentric and different : he was singer in a band, he never really learned music…And lot of people in cinema’s world are jalous.

ParticipantEurgh, I rated that in Empire too. Yeah the music critics over here are mostly pretentious old men – I know they teach me at uni. Anyway, when I’m writing for the Empire music section someday, I promise I’ll do a much better job and actually give good music good reviews.
