Cello Concerto

[ddddeeee]

Elfman’s Cello Concerto premieres at the Wiener Konzerthaus on March 18, with a further performance on March 20. Gautier Capuçon is soloist, joined by conductor David Robertson and the Wiener Symphoniker. It is cast in four movements – like Elfman’s 2017 Violin Concerto and forthcoming Percussion Concerto – and lasts 36 minutes. The piece will receive subsequent performances in Paris in May and its North American premiere in San Francisco on November 11. The Cello Concerto is a joint commission from Wiener Symphoniker, Wiener Konzerthaus, Orchestre Philharmonie de Radio France and San Francisco Symphony.

Wow, rather unexpected to being able to listen to it in full. Great way to get a “copy” before a proper release…

I’ll give it a listen when I have some time. Thanks !

Briefly met Elfman at a signing on Thursday. I asked him if there were any plans to record this, and he said it’ll be recorded ‘next fall’.

This was recorded yesterday at Henry Wood Hall. It was conducted by Lionel Bringuier and performed by the BBC Philharmonic.

Interesting. I’d assumed that the cello concerto would be paired with the-still-unrecorded suite for chamber orchestra. I’m guessing that with Capuçon being a big name, they wanted to capitalise on that a bit.

For this new album, Gautier Capuçon immerses himself in the world of legendary composer Danny Elfman with the first studio recording of his Cello Concerto. Tailor-made for the French virtuoso and recorded in London with Lionel Bringuier and the BBC Concert Orchestra, this intense work blends technical virtuosity with a gift for melody. In the second part of the album, Capuçon explores the cinematic side of Danny Elfman’s work through arrangements by his longtime collaborator Jérôme Ducros, who also accompanies him on the piano. From the mystical *Edward Scissorhands* to the iconic themes of *Spider-Man* and *The Nightmare Before Christmas*, this album highlights the unique character and richness of a composer who is as distinctive as he is inventive.

Oooh, some surprises there. Fun. I thought it was just going to be the same old greatest hits.

Fifty Shades of Grey doesn’t have a main title, though. I’m guessing that’s the ‘Shades of Grey’ track that sets up the main theme.
