GuestO_O
It’s becoming very difficult for me to wait to here the whole suites.

GuestThe Spidey Suite ends at the worst possible moment, when the theme gets very brassy and heroic…

Anyone else noticed the obvious use of loops from “Revenge” ?

Guest“Oh, and I just wanted to mention that that’s not neccesarally a bad thing. I was kinda hoping though that this film, like Batman Returns, was gonna be darker and more emotional. I loved that switch betweed the Batman films.”
How do you know there isnt a switch??? I mean you’ve only heard two 30 second clips out of the entire score,
If it had been the Batman Returns score and they played clips of The Main Titles(like the Batman theme) or Batman Vs the Circus, or even the Cat Suite and parts of The Lair, I mean you wouldnt be able to get a good enough Idea of how diffrent and similar it is to the first score.I was able to tell a difference with Doc Ock’s theme, its very precussive, much more than the Goblin’s theme, which is very fitting for Doc Ock.

GuestIt sounds like a smaller orchestra was used for this score. I could be wrong.
It sounds interesting. Some of the chords have changed from the original, and it sounds great! The main theme seems to have more definable punch to the notes in the trumpet section, sort of like, “This is the theme, you idiots, so stop whining that there isn’t one.”

GuestI agree, the orchestra sounds smaller and less powerful. Yes, the Spidey Suite has a more defined theme, but it does sound much weaker than the last movie. Ock’s theme reminds me a lot of Planet of the Apes with a bit of Hulk at the end, which is pretty cool. I like the percussiveness to it. Plus, both themes have the signature Danny Elfman sound to them—listen to them and you know he wrote them. They better release a score CD soon or I’ll freak out!

GuestWell, as much as I want to hear these music clips, I’m going to be strong and wait for a truly unblemished movie experience for Spider-Man 2.
I’ve done the same for Big Fish, and I’ve gotten greedy for being deprived, so to speak.

GuestBodhi, I know what you’re doing, and if you can manage to keep yourself from listening to it for the next month or so, then I am very impressed. Me, I’ve listened to the Suites many times at this point because Spider-Man got me interested in Danny Elfman. Here’s what I’ve observed:
-The theme is more established this time around
-The sound of Spidey’s Suite makes it seem like Spider-Man is more experienced this time. The last score had that majestic first-time feel to it (“Revenge, for example) and this time it sounds like spidey’s here and he knows what he’s doing. The orchestra sounds weaker now, but that could be to better establish the theme to those who still don’t think that Spider-Man had a theme. I read that the first score had a 99-piece orchestra, I wonder how big this one was.
-Doc Ock’s Suite will most likely be used almost only in action sequences…I couldn’t find a definite theme from the 30 seconds of it that are available, unlike the Green Goblin’s theme, which could have percussion removed for non-action scenes. I’ll bet that there’s a separate theme for Otto Octavius, just like how there are separate themes for Peter and Spidey.
-Also from Ock’s Suite, it sounds like Danny is having a bit more fun with his scores again. Big Fish had many of his classic querky sounds, and at the beginning of the Ock clip, it sounds a lot like “Mars Attacks!” which was a very fun score. I’ve determined that this short clip is a combination between “Mars Attacks!” “Hulk,” and “Planet of the Apes.”

GuestOh yeah, I’m certainly not saying “you are bad if you listen to Spider-Man 2 music before you see the film.” However, I challenge anyone to go cold-turkey, on any film you’re anticipating. You might love the experience.

GuestI’ve read somewhere that the Main Titles sequence shows scenes from the first movie as a summary, a bit like Superman 2. So, if the Spidey Suite comes from it that could explain the use of the Revenge’s loops.
The fact that the theme seems more clear and heroic now is a completely logic : the first movie was about a kid who becomes an hero. Now, Parker made his choices and fully takes them on. He is Spider-Man.

Guestthis is going to cause offence i know…but from what i heard from that score it seems like danny’s just rehashing his last 4 years of work. he’s gettin kinda generic, not interesting anymore.
June 3, 2004 at 9:43 pm #50337Anonymous
GuestI’ll admit it already sounds like it
June 3, 2004 at 11:08 pm #50338Anonymous
GuestIt does sound sort of generic for him, doesn’t it? I’ll reserve judgement until I hear the whole score within the movie, though.
I think he just needs a break from action comic-book movies. They’re sucking the creative juices from his brain!

Guesti just wish he’d write some more kind of structured action music, like sleepy hollow or batman or something. they were great. these days some parts of his score seem to be as if he’s using his own “licks”. like a jazz improvisor in a way. its just all the same stuff really with the particular theme of a film added over it or something. its not too impressive. corpse bride and charlie will bring him back im sure.

Guestelf, it’s just possible that the clip uses an updated codec or some such rubbish. You may need to upgrade or update your version of Media Player.

GuestHey – anyone having problems with Windows media player… if you have a firewall, try disabling it. It wouldn’t play for me, until I did…
As for the extracts themselves… I’m generally not overwhelmed, but I did enjoy the Dock Ock stuff (although it kinda sounds like he just cut pieces from Mars Attacks, Batman, and Planet of the Apes, then stuck them together!!). Also, I think the opening of the Dock Ock suite sounds too quirky to be taken seriously, if you get what I mean… it’s a little bit “joker”. I loved the goblin’s theme, and I think Dock Ock is a better villain, and I think he deserves better music. However, to Danny’s credit, he has written musical feels that play off the villains well… the goblin had those huge, sweeping, homophonic melodies, that suited the goblin as he flew around, etc… and there’s a bit more polyphony in Dock Ock’s scene, depicting his ‘tentacles’, I guess… and at the very last couple of seconds of the extract, just as it fades out, listen to the violin phrases – to me, they remind me of the way Dock Ock’s tentacles move: kind wriggly, and wavy. I’m getting way analytical here, over just 30 seconds! I can’t help it, sorry! hehe
With regards to the orchestra sounding smaller, I reckon that might jut be because of the quality of these extracts – once we hear it top quality, and fully mastered – it’l probably sound alot more beefed up.

GuestIn response to everyone…Who is to say that he still isn’t using a 99-piece orchestra. Maybe Danny felt that the full orchestra was just too-much weight for some parts in the movie and then does bring out the full orchestra in major impacts or serious parts. My personal opinion is the 30.sec. we hear could be the “psycotic” doc ock that will be portrayed in the movie and maybe it is more beefier when we see him kick butt and what not. Those are my ramblings.

GuestI don’t think it’ll suck, I’m expecting mediocre. Just not into those kinds of movies.
