GuestThis is probably just me, but as i’m listening to NMBC and Boingo, i can’t help but detect a diff. in danny’s voice. I just doesn’t sound like him to me in NMBC. Anyone else hear this? And if so, any explainations?

GuestIt definitelly sounds like him to me. While Boingo is rock, NBC is a film musical. There should be some differences, if you know what I mean.

GuestInteresting to bring that up, Jess.
The first time I listened to an Oingo Boingo song, I had a little trouble making sure it was indeed Danny’s voice.
I had listened NmBC countless times, and knew all songs by heart before grabbing ‘Best O’Boingo’. So I got used a lot to Danny’s voice in NmBC – hence the little doubts at first. As Mr.Dantz says, the recording techniques on musicals must be quite different from rock songs. Not to mention the fact that Elfman had to work his voice much more to fit Jack’s personnality.
Oh, and I would never have guessed that Danny is also Barrel’s singing voice, if it wasn’t mentionned in the credits. He’s totally unrecognizable as Barrel, isn’t he ?

GuestToward the tail end of the Boingo days, he was starting to complain about his voice during shows. Making comments about doing a certain song now, while he’s still got a little voice left… wearing scarves around his neck at the Irvine, outdoor, shows. The last few Halloween shows, there was a diff in the strength of his voice, night to night, even.
I think he plum near wore it out with all that yodeling and screaming, et al.June 5, 2004 at 2:51 pm #50366Anonymous
GuestListen to “Gratitude” (the So-Lo or Alive album, I don’t remember) : Jack Skellington was born many years before TNBC…

GuestThat, and The Nightmare Before Christmas is Danny singing as Jack. And, while they’re still technically the same “person” there’s a difference than him just singing as himself.

GuestPlus the fact that, if you listen hard enough, you can hear Danny’s voice singing in the background during parts when it’s the entire cast (not Jack), like during “This Is Halloween”. There he deepened his voice as deep as it goes, which is pretty deep.

GuestSo, did they have his voice altered with equipment for NMBC or something? Or was it that his voice wore out – b/c I’m comparing Jack’s voice to Danny’s on Farewell…

GuestNo, obviously his voice isn’t worn out.
I think the live shows stressed it a lot. Studio recording being a different animal.
He’s always sounded a little different live than recorded.June 28, 2004 at 2:11 am #50892Anonymous
GuestThe main difference is how he pronounces his words. Even though he never took music lessons, he’s VERY in-tune with everything you need to know about performance and technique and teaching himself everything he needed to know. When he sings with Boingo, he uses a more “rock” way of pronouncing words, which is very much like speaking. But when he sang for Jack, it was very Broadway-styled and the words were pronounced much more…classically, for lack of a better word. The way he had to sing for Jack was SO expressive and SO lyrical…very gorgeous — much like Michael Crawford, actually (“Phantom of the Opera”) and that’s a huge compliment…and Boingo songs are a completely different style and context. but anyway, yeah, that’s what causes most of the difference you hear between TNBC and Boingo.

Guestthe song “Insanity” has a kind of Jack Skelington-ish feel to it… I think so, anyway.

GuestThe best of Nightmare is Danny’s tribute to his own original Movie the Forbidden
Zone. I’m sure it’s been posted before. If it hasn’t what kind of fans are you. Oogie boogie is a direct knock off of The Devil in the first movie. Right down to the theme music. I’m sure that was Danny’s farewell to his Boingo Fans. It was his going full circle. - AuthorPosts
