Christ it’s dead here. Where is all the Elfman news? Anyway, I am curious what everyone else is listening to? I guess I’ll start:
I gave myself some very nice birthday presents by ordering some great old soundtracks. Anyone fans of Mario Bava? Big influence of Tim Burton. Not long ago, DigitMovies released some great filmscores to his movies — all the orginal recordings. I’m a huge classic horror movie soundtrack collector, and these are some of the finest. If you’re a fan of Elfman, I urge seeking a few out.
Right now, I’m listening to Carlo Rustichelli’s music for THE WHIP AND THE BODY. The recurring theme, “Windsor Concerto” is subllime. Very lush, gothic and grand piano piece. Very Max Steiner-ish. It is a double CD with Carlo’s music for BLOOD AND BLACK LACE; another nice album — though not as rich in atmoshpher as WHIP. I also snagged the CDs for BLACK SUNDAY/THE EVIL EYE and BAY OF BLOOD/RABID DOGS/BARRON BLOOD.
The music for RABID DOGS is essentially the same piece, just re-orchestrated over and over again, but still very aggressive; Harpsicord, strings, brass, electric guitar and drums — very cool.
Anyway, if your don’t know about these but enjoy discovering interesting music, check them out. They are not so easy to find, but here are some links:

February 22, 2007 at 3:40 am #58196KWashiParticipantRight now I’m listening to Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky cantata …..I also listened through Alexander Nevsky (the film version), Ivan the Terrible, the Lieutenant Kije suite, and the Scythian suite today. On my iPod Shuffle I’m going through Shostakovich’s 15 symphonies (I believe I am on #, and also am enjoying various CDs from the “Concertos, Orchestral Suites, and Chamber Symphonies” and “Piano Works” box sets from Decca. I’ve also been listening to alot of Ennio Morricone lately (especially the Giu La Testa 2 CD set, Quando Le Donne….. and the Pure Gold 6 CD set).
When I want something other than orchestral music I’ll grab my Five Iron Frenzy or Joy Electric CDs….The Brothers Martin is a good CD too. That’s what’s been going through my ears recently.February 22, 2007 at 5:19 am #58198Ryan KeaveneyKeymasterHere’s my top 25 most played in iTunes for the past two months:

February 22, 2007 at 5:36 am #58200Spider-FanParticipantThe redesign is much nicer on the eyes. With the old look, my eyes could never properly adjust from the bright orange. This works much better!
February 22, 2007 at 5:41 am #58201Spider-FanParticipantI’m not really into classical music, but I work for a museum north of Boston and here’s one of our upcoming events that might appeal to some of you:
Boston Artists Ensemble
Friday, February 23, 8 pm
Shostakovitch’s Quartet No. 8 as well as Dvořák’s Quintet for String Quartet and Bass, in G, Opus 77. Back by popular demand—guess the composer and title of a mystery piece and win a pair of tickets.
I’ve always heard Danny was a fan of Shostakovitch, so I thought maybe that’s of interest on this here board.

February 22, 2007 at 10:30 pm #58205NatreboParticipantHey Lucius,
Nice to see another Regina Spektor fan on here. I just came across her music in the last year and now own her latest CDs. Which ones do you listen too, and is her early stuff as good or, dare I say, better?
February 24, 2007 at 12:32 am #58207LuciusParticipantI JUST got into Regina. I’ve only heard ‘Begin to Hope’ and have listened to the song Fidelity over and over again. She’s good. But she’s noooo Elfman. (Of course I’m saying that so Ryan won’t delete this post because it’s not on topic.)

February 25, 2007 at 7:14 am #58210NatreboParticipantFidelity was the first song I heard of her’s too, and I listed to that and On the Radio from the same “Begin to Hope” CD over and over again when I got it. From that CD I also love “Apres Moi”!
I also have her “Soviet Kisch” CD that contain the wonderful song Us on it.
I guess I’m behind the times because I don’t own an iPod or an MP3 player, however I do have a Walkman CD player that plays MP3 discs.
Of the recent CDs that I’ve been listening to:
Soviet Kitsch – Regina Spector
The Hidden Land – Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
Charlotte’s Web – Elfman of course (I got this when it came out, but I’ve been playing it all the way through at least 4 times a week since then)
Ainadamar (Opera) – Osvaldo Golijov
Are Me – Barenaked Ladies
rejected score to 2001 – Alex North
SupersunnySpeedgraphic, the lp – Ben Folds
The Dharma at Big Sur – John Adams
Pan’s Labyrinth – Javier Navarrete (if I had the vote, I would give the Oscar to this score, but I haven’t seen Desplat’s or Glass’ contributions in their proper contexts yet)
The Queen – Alexandre Desplat
Notes on a Scandal – Philip Glass
Dragon Songs – Lang Lang (Pianist)
Troll – Richard Band
Dvorak Tone Poems – Conducted by Simon Rattle
Absolutely – Sister HazelI’ve also been listening to a lot of Podcasts I found on iTunes like…
They Now – a They Might be Giants fan cast
They Might be Giants official podcast
Coverville
and many Film score and Classical Music Podcasts… and oh yea, Danny Elfman Rules!!!!
