    Hello everyone,

I was starting a reply on the Mallrats thread about the Shore / Elfman relationships when I felt the urge to share a thought with ya’all.

    (Auto-psychoanalysis mode ON)

I must confess that I don’t like ED WOOD. I don’t like this film. Okay, I’ll even say it’s the one Tim Burton film, along with Planet of the Apes, that I really can’t dig.
However it has nothing to do with the script, the acting or the film itself : it’s just because because Danny didn’t do the music.
The fact that Elfman was sort of kicked out of Ed Wood just made it impossible for me to accept it as a genuine Tim Burton film. I usually love Shore’s music (eXistenZ and Silence of the Lambs being my favorites), but in this precise case, I hate it, and to me it wasted the whole film to just know Danny Elfman’s score wouldn’t play along.

    (Auto-psychoanalysis mode OFF)

Am I the only one to feel this way ?

Actually, ED WOOD is the only Tim Burton movie I _will_ watch anymore! I think it’s got the most depth and heart. MARS ATTACKS! is so much more dissapointing to me after I watch that film and think about what direction he could have gone in afterward.

Oh, and yes… it would have been nice to have heard an Elfman score in that movie, but the fact is that Howard Shore wrote an excellent one.

I thought Elfman and Burton just wanted to take a break from each other for a while, not that Danny was kicked out or anything?

Nope, there was a big blow out toward the end of NIGHTMARE and Danny and Tim didn’t speak for three years! In fact, at one time Howard Shore was down to score MARS ATTACKS! as they still hadn’t made up yet.

The reasons for the skirmish have never been made known, but some have specualted that Elfman wanted more credit than he got for sheparding NIGHTMARE. When I saw Elfman at the LA Film Fest in June, he gave closest explanation he’s given yet: that it all boiled down to a clash of personalities.

Ah, that’s kind of rediculous. Howard Shore did an excellent job with the score, and the movie is probably Burton’s best. It’s one of my all time favorite movies … I just don’t see how anyone couldn’t like it!

Howard Shore was signed to score MARS ATTACKS! There’s a great story why he didn’t ultimately end up scoring the film… But I’ll never tell!!

Because Ryan enjoys tormenting us :-)

I love Mars Attacks! too . . . It strikes me as the kind of movie that wasn’t made to be profitable or have a wide audience . . . it’s just a bunch of people screwing around because it’s fun.

Your being too harsh! Ed Wood was a great movie! I wouldve liked an Elfman score for myself but i still feel its one of Tim Burtons best! Give it another try! Howard Shore did a good job! And no more talk about Tim and Danny not getting along! I dont wanna hear it! Even though it is in the past!

Ed Wood is a very passable score of a Burton movie. It sounds a lot like Danny Elfman music, anyway.

    >>There’s a great story why he didn’t ultimately end up scoring the film… But I’ll never tell!!<< Oh, I know! It’s because Danny Elfman ended up scoring it!

    1. Ed Wood is enjoyable, but not on the top of my list. Partly because of all the swearing. (Go ahead, flame me, call me a prude.) The Shore score didn’t bother me. It fit, it worked well.

    2. John, you won’t watch ANY other Burton movie? I thought “Big Fish” had a LOT more heart than “Ed Wood.”

    3. “Mars Attacks!” is underrated. Many critics labelled it as lame, but I find it funnier with each viewing.

    4. Just for fun, I’ll add that either Beetlejuice or Big Fish is my favorite Burton film, just to see who reacts to that and how.

Swearing?! … Who cares about that! It adds an element of realism!

Maybe Danny got the job because he finally agreed to sleep with Tim? Eh Ryan? We could just start guessing until you spill the beans. Hey, Danny even said “Why does any marriage end?” when talking about the post-_Nightmare_ nightmare.

Ah well. _Ed Wood_ seems different and is different because it’s a biopic (in the traditional Hollywood sense), and a personal tribute. _Mars Attacks!_ is more like a homage, but that links the two projects, no matter who scored them.

Maybe Tim made Danny and Howard get into a fight and the first blood was the loser. Danny is obviously the bigger, stronger and younger and more tattooed of the both of them, so there ya go. Makes sense.

“Ed Wood” being my favourite Tim Burton film, ironically didn’t have a Danny Elfman score. It would have certainly been nice if Elfman scored it, but Howard Shore nailed it quite perfectly anyway.

I love all the old original Edward D. Wood Jr. films so Burton’s opus in my eyes is the work of a master. Ed Wood is my fav Burton film too and think Elfman would have obviously provided a great score – I am glad that Shore ultimately did it because his is great! We got Mars Attacks out of Elfman later so kind of the best of both worlds.

Didn’t Burton contact a really sick Mancini to get him to score it and it was Mancini that recommended Shore?? The shame really is that Mancini didn’t do it – would have been a great and very appropiate Swan Song for another Master Composer.

The movie itself I have memorized and how could anyone not like all the dark humour! If you read up on the real Ed Wood you all know that the movie was a nice tribute to the spirit of the man but Ed Wood had a really hard and at the end horrible life.

Having Mancini score this would’ve been wonderful!
But I do feel that Shore treated it too much like a 50s film instead of a modern film when writing the score. I haven’t decided if I like that factor yet, lol.
