Because the latest Tim Burton/Danny Elfman is nearly upon us, I thought it would be nice to talk about other partnerships between directors and film composers that have thrilled and entertained us.

Burton and Elfman are my favorite modern team. My all-time favorite team is Federico Fellini and Nino Rota, who worked with each other for nearly thirty years, from 1952’s “The White Sheik” to 1979’s “Orchestra Rehearsal.” Fellini often used circus metaphors in his films, and Rota responded by populating his films with circus-styled marches that gave the film an otherworldly quality. Rota would also interpolate jazz and old standards into the mix, such as when “Jingle Bells” and “Entry of the Gladiators” appeared in “La Dolce Vita.” Onscreen, it appeared that the music was being played by a band, a radio, a traveling minstrel, just as if it were a source cue. I always thought this technique was effective, making it seem as if in the world of Fellini that music could suddenly pop out of nowhere, that circus music felt natural in that environment. A team that will never be replaced.

There are a lot of good ones, but my favorite (after Burton and Elfman) is Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone.
