As a huge Danny Elfman fan, I find that the only other music that I can truely compare to Elfman would be a progressive rock band called Dream Theater. This band consists of some of the most impressive and overwelming compositions I’ve heard in my life. I even have a tatoo on my leg of the Dream Theater symbol and I am contemplating an Elfman tatoo of some sort to add to the flavor. Don’t get me wrong, this band doesn’t sound at all like score music (besides the album released a few years ago – Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance) but the complexity and emotions can very well be compared to the power of most of elfman’s scores. I find the balance between these two “fixations” of mine create a satisfying middle ground. I know this isn’t the Dream Theater message board but I think it would be interesting to see if there are any other Elfman fans that know of, or like Dream Theater, ya know, so I dont feel so completely alone in this world.

I saw Dream Theater a couple of years ago, and, well, I’ll be diplomatic – it wasn’t my cup of tea. The musicianship was fine, and the compositions were fine, as long as you can handle the prog aesthetic (which I can; I dig quite a bit of prog), but that singer…man… His voice makes me want to fill up a pillowcase with kittens and go to town with a hammer. But hey, to paraphrase Frank Zappa, it’s the 21st century; whatever you can do to have a good time, get on with it, as long as it doesn’t couse a murder.

I totally agree about the singer. His name’s James Labrie and, well, he makes me cringe sometimes but I think once you get over his operettic style, it’s easier to appreciate the songs as they are. The thing with that is, if Dream Theater were an instrumental band, they’d go nowhere, as they aren’t really going anywhere to begin with but a band like this, to have a singer, would require him to hit some of those high, piercing notes regardless. My mission, in life, is to spread the “good news” of this truely inspirational music, along with Elfman’s scores. I’m glad that Lonesome Cowboy has seen them live, let alone even heard of them. For some strange reason, this makes me happy, even if he didn’t enjoy the singer.

I have to say that I also agree about the singer, and I also like ELP which would be GREAT! if it wasn’t for Lake (singer again). Emerson, as my friend would say, is the shiznicht.
