GuestI just bought ED WOOD on DVD today, and Danny Elfman didn’t do the score; Howard Shore did. This is the only film Tim Burton did (other than Vincent and Frankenweenie) that DID NOT include Elfman’s musical contribution. Anyone know why? (It’s a good score anyway; I’m just wondering)

GuestLover’s tiff. Separation after intensive struggles with Batman Returns and Nightmare BC, followed by fairytale reunion for Mars Attacks! (in which it sounds like Danny does his best to outdo Shore’s retro-sci-fi credits and re-establish himself as top dog). I do so love a happy ending (sniffle).

GuestI was just about to buy ED WOOD on DVD, but amazon says it won’t be released until JANUARY 1 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!?!?!?! I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE RELEASED TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GuestThe ED WOOD DVD was recalled for reasons that are unclear to me. There are people on eBay selling copies at insane prices, if you care to go that way.
As for Danny not scoring the film, yeah ‘lover’s tiff’ is about right. Neither Burton nor Elfman have ever been clear about what the argument centered around, but the rumor is that it had something to do with Elfman wanting to receive more credit for his contribution to NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. In fact, as NIGHTMARE was wrapping up, Elfman even said that he was really looking forward to scoring ED WOOD that next year!

GuestOk, let me clear up some little things!
The Ed Wood dvd DOES EXIST !!! I own it, and it’s an official Buena Vista / Touchstone release, that i bought at my local store. The thing is : I live in switzerland, and it has been released in Europe, but not in america. Why??? Simply because it did very well in Europe, specially in France. European critics loved the movie, and I believe the success was not the same in the usa. Anyway, try to buy it online, in some european web site (like http://www.fnac.fr) but you have to know that it will be a region2 dvd, which won’t be compatible with all dvd players! Then, Burton and Elfman did not collaborate on this movie, simply because they had not the same approach in mind. Elfman said in an interview in a french magazine that Burton wanted Danny to score it in a certain way that Danny did not like. We all know that Danny hates to hear : “-you should compose the way that guy composes-“. He said to Burton that he wouldn’t do it that way, and that if he really wanted it to be like that, he should hire someone else… And that is what Burton did. Then, Danny also said to the press that “They needed a little vacation from each other”…
There is all the explanation!

GuestThey are going to re-release it in the U.S. just not yet. don’t waste your money and just wait.

GuestI’ve never heard the version of the story that Eric offered, but since no one has ever gone on record about it, it could very well be true!
An interesting side note is that after Elfman dropped out of the equation, Burton then asked Henry Mancini to score the movie. Mancini did not accept the assigment as he was in poor health at the time (and in fact passed away well before the film came out), but he recommended Howard Shore for the gig.

GuestI believe the feud was over story credit.

GuestThis is kind of off-topic: Did Thomas Newman score “Frankenweenie”? I remember hearing that somewhere.

GuestThe crazy thing is that the Ed Wood Spacial Edition DVD was advertised at Bestbuy and Circuit City in the Sunday paper.

GuestMichael Convertino and David Newman composed the score to Frankenweenie. I have the complete score if anyone would like to take a listen.

GuestThe DVD was put on the shelf at my local FYE (where I’m a Classical Department Temp) before the release date, and also before the recall, so luckily I was able to buy it. It has a featurette on the use of the Theremin in the score, but I haven’t been able to view it yet. Incidentally I remember a recall on the Beavis & Butthead DVDs that you can only get on TV now.
The problem Danny had with Batman Returns was with the final Sound Mix where is music was sacrificed a lot of the time to the Sound FX.

GuestThis is from the Digital Bits Website:
Okay… we’ve got another post coming later this afternoon. But in the interest of helping as many of you find copies of the Ed Wood: Special Edition as possible, without having to buy it on eBay for $100+ from would-be profiteers (which is just plain wrong), we wanted to update you on where readers are finding it. Supposedly, Borders and Blockbuster have put it up for sale, along with many Costco locations (and probably other warehouse retailers as well). We’ve had readers tell us that a few Best Buys locations have also made it available for sale. Some Fred Meyer store locations apparently have it available, and many of those who were smart enough to pre-order the disc on Amazon are being told via e-mail that their discs have shipped. The message is that the disc is out there, and you should act fast if you want it.
Hope that helps,
Nat

GuestI bought it last night from BEST BUY. I’m good now. Sorry about the panic. Move a long people, nothing to see here…

GuestWell, I ordered it. I have a friend that works there.

GuestMore Credit for NBC? He got listed once for “Music & Lyrics,” once for “Original Score,” and twice in the character voices credits. What else could he want?
I’m sorry…but I just had part of my image of Danny tarnished a little. I always just kinda hoped and dreamed he was above the petty quibblings of Hollywood hotheads who ask “x” bucks for their work AND get into tiffs about “how big is my name going to be on the screen” and so forth.
I’ll try to get over it, but if THAT is the correct answer to the Ed Wood/Howard Shore “scandal”, I’m disappointed in Danny.

GuestI’m a bit disappointed in Danny, too. But sometimes when your eally like something, not everything turns out perfectly. But those instances make us appreciate the things we like more. I’m not sure why, but they usually do. But Howard Shore’s score was good. Everyone’s score is different. And whether you like it more or less, Danny’s would’ve been different.
Sorry about sounding absurdly philosophic.

GuestAgain : the region 2 dvd does exist and it’s very cheap (10 € on dvdzone2.com). I repeat myself but my previous post has been deleted…

GuestI too have heard of the Batman Returns mix being the cause of the split, but didn’t have any quote to prove my memory correct. My view has always been, though, that the mix in Batman Returns was far superior to that of Batman, and a number of subsequent action movies scored by Elfman.

GuestDon’t forget that he was mentioned as associate producer, too.
