GuestI was reading a review for the Haunted Mansion in the Boston Globe the other day, and it said that Mark Mancina’s score is very “Danny Elfmanesque.” I went crazy, as it’s not very often when I read his name in the paper. Later in the day at school, one of my friends who takes violin informed me that a guest speaker asked if anyone had heard of Danny Elfman (unfortuately nobody had). Then, in one class, we had nothing to do so we watched the Simpsons (of course, the main theme written by Danny Elfman). I was ecstatic to have heard so much about Danny Elfman in one day, I was afraid that he was just known among us people. Anyone else ever have a day like that?

Guestwe have tv’s too… but anyway , I saw HM today i liked it alot BUT the score really didnt grab me. It was very good and Elfmanesque ( is that what word you used?) but nothing very special. Disney movies have too much music in my opinion so a sence that really needs the music to enhance it cant happen ( i worded that really wrong , but do you catch my drift? lol) I suggest you all go see the movie tho , it was VERY good and very not Dinsey until the end.

oh by the way …. the beautiful oboe part from NmBC ( while Jack is walking to the valley with all the doors) is used in the teaser trailer for Scooby Doo 2
and a theme from EdS. was used in the teaser TV trailer for Haunted. i dunno why i waited so long to post that lol .. oh well …November 29, 2003 at 8:38 pm #46950Anonymous
GuestI quoted the Boston Globe on the word “Elfmanesque.” So would you recommend the movie? I was only really drawn to it because of the music ffrom the trailers, but if you say it’s good, then maybe I might see it.
(By the way, we were watching a simpsons video in class, but we do have cable in our school–neato!)

GuestElfman is pretty darn famous for a composer, I mean yeah he is the most famous composer of our film era I would say, I mean John Williams has still probably been the most famous throughout the past 30 years, but I mean from the late 80’s- present Elfman’s stuff work has been everywhere, and is darn famous for a composer. I thought it was really cool the other day, cause I read that he was involved with Skeleton Key’s album Obtanium, which I love that cd, however it doesnt suprise me, they are a band with plenty of boingo-type weirdness

GuestGood point. If you ask ten random people on the street to name a film composer, IF they can name anyone, it’ll be Elfman or John Williams.

GuestIn comparison with people who know who John Williams, or Ennio Morricone, are, there are actually very few people able to name Danny Elfman. Absolutely everyone but my grandmother can whistle either Star Wars or Indiana Jones’ themes by heart. Some random people can sing The Simpsons’ theme, but most of the times they don’t try to know who is behind it.
By the way, I have a fun story about it. I was at a party a few months ago, where a girl asks everyone : “Hey people, who can sing the Star Wars theme ?”
Then somebody else whistles the fanfare.
The same girl now says : “Ok, who can sing Indiana Jones ?”
Somebody sings the theme.
“And now, who can sing the Superman fanfare ?” says the girl.
It takes a little longer, but someone ends up singing it (not me : I had forgotten it, as I never was into Williams at all)
The girl says at last : “So, can you see how much these tunes sound like each other ? Funny, huh ?”
And then, I say : “Well, er… this is quite logical, since all three were written by the same guy… You know, John Williams, that is !”
The girls stares at me with disbelief as if I was a total moron and then replies : “Oh yeah ? Uh… Whatever.”Which is a nice story to show how much people unconsiously react to filmmusic, without paying real attention to it at all.
