GuestOn track number 14 (Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag), it seems that it sounds very Elfman-esque, especially from 2:18-2:35 on the track. I am probably wrong on this, and I know that Elfman composed Roxie’s Suite and After Midnight, but did Elfman compose the Hot Honey Rag?
Oh, and I’m new on this board. Hello, everyone. This is truly a beautiful site, and I can’t wait to hear what comes up next on the Elfman front!

GuestI don’t believe so. It’s quite possible that he took parts of that original score and formed it into something new, in “After Midnight” and “Roxie’s Suite”. That may be the reason. I can see your confusion, though.
Also, welcome.

Guest*nods* Yeah, I can see how that would work. I also just found out a couple of days ago that the Hot Honey Rag was in the original musical, so Elfman didn’t compose it. It still sounds like him, though. *grins*
Thanks for all of your help!
Cheers,

GuestWatch the DVD with the Director’s Commentary on, especially right after Billy Flynn’s first song, during Roxie’s montage. Rob Marshall makes comments about how he got ahold of Danny Elfman, and how impressed he was that Elfman was able to step in and write music that fit so well into an already-written musical production. So it’s not that Hot Honey sounds like Elfman — it’s that Elfman did a DARN good job of sounding like Hot Honey.

GuestBrian:
*smiles* I have watched the Director’s Commentary and am very happy that they actually said something about Danny in there and how fitting his style was for the movie (I think I’ve heard somewhere before that Danny really enjoys doing 20’s-30’s music). I think it’s the bits in minor and the tempos in Hot Honey Rag and Roxie’s Suite/After Midnight that make them sound so similar, but I do not have any knowledge of music whatsoever. I only listen to the music and enjoy it, though I do analyze it a little to give me a slight reason why I like it so much. I digress…
*smiles* Thank you for your comments, Brian!
Cheers,

GuestMy pleasure.
I just re-read my previous post…I hope I didn’t sound arrogant or condescending. Have fun drawing any conclusions you want when you listen to music.
