GuestHi there… I’m sort of new to the board, but have been watching Burton films and listening to Elfman music since Batman 89.
I was just curious as to which film scores are considered Elfman’s best according to you, his fans?
I would have to construct this little list:
1.Edward Scissorhands
2.Batman Returns (especially Birth of a Penguin)
3.Big Fish (especially Jenny’s theme)
4.Sleepy Hollow
5.Black BeautyWhat are your favorites? Or is there really one special theme that can really be called Elfman’s Best?

GuestYou poor sad fools. Anyone who doesn’t list Dolores Claiborne as first, second and third in his/her “best” list is obviously stark-staring mad. How I pity you.

GuestI love Dolores Claiborne. I also love Sommersby quite immensely. I should’ve just listed a top 5 without going any further because anything beyond that on my list is gravely in no order. Anyway, lists will be lists. Anybody else?

GuestI think that Elfman’s best theme would be, for me, the Edward Scissorhands theme. His best score … I can’t decide. Dolores Claiborne is very high up there on my list, though.

Guest1) Edward Scissorhands
2) Family Man
3) Nightmare Before Christmas
4) Batman (I include Batman Returns here, even though the score is quite different)
5) Sleepy HollowI’ve never heard Deloris Clairborne or Black Beauty in full, nor seen the movies, though I’d like too. May I also go so far to suggest that Spider-Man will be among spider-fan’s picks? I mean no offense, your tastes and opinions are as they are, I just find the score a bit week.

GuestHow can you say the score’s weak? I thought many of the parts from the score were brilliant, and some of Elfman’s best moments (the end of “Parade Attack”, for example, and the “Costume Montage”). Not necessarily his best stuff, but great stuff, in my opinion.

GuestThis is an old thread, but someone asked me about this other day and it made me think about it. I don’t like to rank things numerically, really, but my top five would include:
BATMAN RETURNS (1992)
BLACK BEAUTY (1994)
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (1996)
THE FAMILY MAN (2000)
HULK (2003)A runner up would be the first MEN IN BLACK (1997) score, but I don’t find that as listenable and enjoyable as some of his other efforts.
It’s strange to me that two replacement scores he wrote under very time-pressured circumstances would wind up on my list. Also, nothing from the 80s, and only one of his Burton scores. Anyway, those are the six that I listen to the most and have really stood the test of time (thus far).
