GuestDoes anybody know what kind of sequencer/software/hardware Danny Elfman uses to compose/record his scores? I think they’re pure mental. By the way.

GuestNot sure, but he’s probably using ProTools. It’s the best in the business as far as I know.

GuestElfman uses MotU Digital Performer for MIDI and Digidesign ProTools for Audio, both running on two G4s. His list of gear includes about 12 E-MU samplers with a total of over 1,5GB RAM, three E-MU Proteus II, one Korg Trinity Rack, one Clavia NordRack, the Alesis QSR, Roland JV-1080, Roland JV-2080 and two Yamaha 02R mixing consoles.
He’s not too crazy about the latest synthesizers and stuff, but he tries to keep his computers and software up to date.
Danny uses the three Proteus II soundmodules together with the Digital Performer to do an orchestral mock-up of the score, which will be replaced later by the recording of the real orchestra (which is recorded on ProTools or, if it’s recorded by Shawn Murphy, on analog 24 tracks, with a separate 8-channel mix printed to two Genex MO recorders and then sent to a Yamaha 02R, where a stereo submix for the CD will be created.) All of the synth and sampled percussion stuff is done in Danny’s home studio with the help of sampling engineer Ashley Witt, and it’s completely MIDI – for reasons of flexibility. He has a second E-MU samplers-rig in a rack which exactly duplicates his home studio so he can easily move it from studio to scoring session. Since most of his pre-production is MIDI-based, I’m not sure why he uses ProTools – but “Titles revisited” from MIB2 for example is completely done with ProTools, using the audio files from the recording session, as well as “Main Titles deconstructed” from PotA.I hope that helped.
