GuestI came across a story in the Film Comment publication where they had summaries of the best film scores of every year since King Kong.
I was happy to see that Elfman’s Batman made the list, until I read its summary.
I just had to laugh and share this with you guys:
(“Batman (1989) Danny Elfman
Former rock musician Elfman took to scoring as a “hummer” – breathing basic themes and ideas into a tape recorder, which an orchestrator (in this case the fine Shirley Walker) then put into actual form. He has proven the limits of this approach – his subsequent scores all sound the same. Still, one cannot deny that Elfman-Walker came up with the perfect grandiose sound here: world-shaking but inconsequential, tension without fear, a prankster’s view of villainy, a geek’s idea of heroism.”)
Someone should ask them where they get their information.
They also accuse Psycho of being nonthematic.

GuestYou should be mad if it were true, yet every point they make is pure unadulterated BS.

GuestI agree with Bodhi–it’s good for a laugh, and that’s pretty much it.

GuestOk, that is it, it’s time for the torches and pitchforks again people!!! Seriously, why do people do that kind of thing? Have they ever heard of respect? These kind of things are just a low blow to anyone who is a fan of music period. I don’t care if someone says “it sounds like that other score” or whatnot but to go and say that the person who wrote it didn’t really write it is stupid. Besides, what composer (with the exception of those working under Mr. Zimmer) would compose anything for anything without being credited let ALONE having someone else take credit for it. Ok, that is enough ranting for now. Please call again.
Knight (Who thanks… someone that he couldn’t hum in tune if his life depended on it.)

GuestThe Psycho music is mostly based on motifs rather than strong, solid themes. Bernard Herrmann said he preferred giving characters and places motifs.

GuestBut I’m not saying it’s bad! I love the Psycho score, and think it’s really clever in the way it sets out to do what it needs to.

That’s true, Psycho is more motific than melodic than say, King of Kings, but there is plenty of musical ideas repeated in Psycho for it to have themes.

GuestYeah no kidding! There’s a perfect example of someone who needs to shut up about things they don’t know.
