and I still miss him. Any fan of Elfman’s should check out his stuff; they had a few similarities.

Like Elfman, Zappa was able to write pop songs that were just as catchy and hummable as anything in the top 10, but were just off-center enough to appeal to those with a taste for weird music, which comprised most of the rest of his catalogue.

As far as their orchestral output goes, both were influenced heavily by Stravinsky, like anyone worth their salt should be. Zappa actually scored a movie once (“Run Home Slow”), though I don’t believe it’s available anywhere.

He also provided me with my username, which is WAAAAY more important than anything else, obviously. Okay, plug over. Go check out one of his albums, if you have any love for odd and sometimes beautiful music, ‘kay? ‘Kay.

I would recommend “Yellow Shark”, there’s some pretty inventive stuff on that one.
All performed by the Ensemble Modern.

Thanks to my parents for introducing me to Frank Zappa (and David Bowie). Incidentally, there’s a great video of me as a kid listening to a Zappa compilation tape my father made…
