GuestDid the score to The Frighteners really deserve so many awful reviews? The movie itself didn’t get any good comments (I’m absolutely osessive about it), but even if the movie is a sleeper, the score doesn’t need to be dragged down with it. Look at this review:
The Frighteners: (Danny Elfman) In a return to the style of his earlier works, Elfman unfortunately produces his second poor soundtrack of the year. Mission: Impossible strayed too far from Elfman’s original dark, choral style, and I didn’t like it because of that. And although The Frighteners exhibits these attributes, Elfman immitated all the worst aspects of his earlier works. I was hoping that this score would resemble Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice, but instead we got a mumbled, themeless remake of Batman Returns. An annoying rock song at the end of the soundtrack is inserted where a strong end-credits theme should have appeared. Elfman was one of the original inspirations (oddly enough) for my love of film scores, and I can only hope he does better with Mars Attacks! this fall.
?????????? Did it really deserve that? Just venting, don’t mind me….

GuestThat review is from Filmtracks. There is no use in complaining!

GuestThe only way to get a positive review on Filmtracks is to have a safe and obvious theme hold Mr. Clemmenson’s hand through the entire score (or a theme that has been beaten to death, hence his Horner reviews).

Guestyeah…i still don’t understand how this site is so popular. And i don’t say that because they don’t like Danny but because they don’t seem to like anything at all.
BTW, is it true that there’s only one guy behind the site ? It would explain a lot of things…

GuestThe Frighetners and Mission Impossible are, without a doubt, my favorite’s from Elfman. I stand by my words. In fact, I love his time period from 1995 to 1997. WHO’s WITH ME?

GuestHis reviews are much better these days.
In some of those early Elfman critiques, the reviewer seemed really unqualified in explaining his views. The Mars Attacks review is literally laughable, as well, completely unhelpful.
Anyone who gives Psycho one star without any explanation is just dubious, to put it nicely.

GuestWait…Elfman just rearranged the score for Psycho, so they where basically saying that Hermann’s score was crap…oh no they didn’t!!!
