GuestDoes anyone else use soundtracks as background music for video games? I like to play first-person shooters, especially Unreal Tournament 2003 (and soon Unreal Tournament 2004), with tracks from Planet of the Apes, Spider-man, Mission Impossible, Hulk, Dead Presidents, Men In Black II, and stuff from the Matrix movies in the background (‘lotta “action music”). How ’bout you guys?

GuestI don’t play many computer/video games. I usually just play a few “god” games. But when I do, I listen to “Mars Attacks!”, “Planet of the Apes,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Star Wars,” etc.

GuestI’ve ripped some James Bond and James Brown to my xbox – it’s real cool to have it playing in Project Gotham Racing.
Also, try playing Soldier of Fortun to the Kill Bill soundtrack… if you’ve seen the movie, then the association your mind makes with the music matches the game perfectly! hehe
I never thought of putting stuff like spiderman over my games… that’s a great idea, as I’m always moaning about the low-budget crappy music on so many videogames.
D-Bo – I like your idea of putting the Matrix stuff over games… I can imagine cues like “The hotel Ambush”, “Exit Mr. Hat”, and “Ontological Shock” going really well in action-y games.

GuestWhat I’ve actually done is probably more complicated than I really needed to do, but take Planet of the Apes for example. What I did was take some of the more actiony cues from different tracks (like the Ape Suites, Preparing for Battle, and the Hunt) and used Cool Edit to meld these cues together into what I like to call the Planet of the Apes “Action Suite.” I did the same with some of the Matrix cues (although just from Reloaded and Revolutions, I don’t have the original Matrix). I lengthened the End Titles from Spider-man and changed Titles Revisited from Men In Black II a little. I think they go very well with FPS’s.

GuestThat’s a cool idea… a little too time consuming for me, though. Maybe you should be a music editor. hehe

GuestI always do, especially when breaking in a new CD or going through all the game’s nooks and crannies. Bernard Herrmann and I had a lot of fun getting all the heart containers in the newest Legend of Zelda game.
During more times than I’d like to say, the music on my stereo frequently goes over cut scenes in complete-synchronisation. Creepy.

GuestI’m a Tetris fanatic, from back in the day, so basically any kind of music is a given with that.
For the other games, though (I dig everything from Mega Man to Resident Evil–and don’t have nearly enough time to play as much as I’d like), I just pick something and go with it. (Although, I think Rammestein and Rob Zombie are fantastic for killing dead things to).
And sometimes–sometimes, mind you–I prefer to just listen to the game. I mean, to me, Super Mario Brothers wouldn’t be the same without the background music playing.
