GuestWell, due to our friend the MP3, we’ve all had a sneak preview of this 17th’s HULK CD. I listened to it (couldn’t help it) and will keep the MP3s until the OST comes out. When that eventually happens I’ll buy the CD-NR. But, as of now, WHat’s everybody think (everybody who’s listened to it, that is)?
I personally think that it’s better than any of his latest stuff (even Spider-Man). The entire thing about him using that ethnic motif and mixing it with the sounds of his earlier scores was genius to me.
Here’s all the stuff I heard vaguely in this CD: Main Titles (Spider-Man, Red Dragon, Planet of the Apes), Prologue (Dolores Claiborne, Red Dragon), Betty’s Dream (Black Beauty mixed with vocals), and that’s just all off the top of my head.
There is a considerable ammount synth on this CD but not as much as in Spider-man or, for that matter, Planet of the Apes. It’s basically all acoustic. That makes it feel much more real to me, anyway. Synth feels cold. Track Twelve was so organic. Did anybody else hear the breaths taken in between the woodwind purrs? That’s night time music right there. Top notch.
Academy Award Worthy. Definitely.
Anyone agree?

GuestI think it’s good, and it’s different. Though, at the same time, it’s extremely familiar. I don’t think it’s one of his best scores, but it is very good. Acadamy award worthy? Hell yes! Many of his other scores before this one were, also. And some were much more deserving. Alas, at a time where someone (coughEminemcough) gets an award for dishing out doggy sh|t, it doesn’t mean anything anymore.

GuestI still don’t know what to think. The main titles have disappointed me a bit, mainly because of the obsessive use of those growingly irritating synths – I am getting a bit tired of those, and they make me sigh for the good old Batman / Pee Wee / Scissorhands synth-free times.
It hurts me to say this, but the Hulk main theme sounds kind of lazy. It crams into one piece the minimalism of Red Dragon’s theme and the synthesizer / orchestra fusion of Spider-Man and Apes… And it just doesn’t sound… unforgettable, like the classic Elfman themes. I still have to listen carefully some more times and listen to it in the movie, but right now I feel a bit disappointed.
Yet, there are, as always, some new experiments in sound in this soundtrack and I still love Danny Elfman for that, even if he does not sound as inspired as he used to. So right now I feel that Hulk is not the GREAT new Danny Elfman score we’re all waiting for, but it has nice moments.June 10, 2003 at 9:58 pm #45438Anonymous
Guestbeing inspired doesn’t mean write memorable themes….

Tired of people speaking in terms of themes.

GuestI only d/led the main titles, but I thought they were pretty cool. I don’t like to listen to scores before I’ve seen the movie, but that’s just me.
Someone else brought up the cool use of the duduk, and I couldn’t agree more. What a fun instrument.

GuestI still can’t pinpoint any sort of theme except for the desending flutes at the Main Titles. Maybe a few more listens will help. Even without the themes, the score is very beautiful and very whimsical.

Guestok, I posted this on the other thread about the score before I knew there was an officially sanctioned thread, do forgive me if you’ve heard this before…

GuestSorry that I’m one of those who speaks in terms of themes, but the truth is – Elfman used to be a wonderful composer of themes. I don’t mind the music being abstract, I love a lot of Elfman’s work with no discerning theme, but… I just miss a big Elfmanesque theme. Call me nostalgic, old fashioned or just insult me, but I miss one of those.

Guesthmmmm….i think i have to insult you !

Seriously, i can understand your point of view but believe me, i take much more pleasure with his “new” way to compose. I can listen a track for months and still discover something new which wasn’t always the case during his Batman/Edward period.June 11, 2003 at 6:18 pm #45469Anonymous
GuestThe Burton/Edward period was where our interest was caught. It remains classic. A New Classic is desired.

GuestMan, a beautiful theme is played at the end of The Truth Revealed and Hulk’s Freedom. I wonder why he didn’t use it more often?
This soundtrack is really growing on me. It’s one of those soundtracks that gets better every time you listen to it.
