Guestthe list of Grammy nominees has been released and Danny Elfman was not individually nominated…RRRRRRR! Here are the nominees in the film score category:
-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (John Williams)
-Catch Me If You Can (John Williams)
-The Hours (Phillip Glass)
-The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Howard Shore)
-Seabuiscuit (Randy Newman)It said that the music they nominate music from October 2002 to this September…seems pretty outdated, but these awards aren’t entirely all that good. The compilation soundtrack for Chicago was nominated, and he did of course compose music for that movie…that’s not too bad.

GuestIsn’t John Williams score to “Chamber of Secrets” just the exact same score re-arranged from “Sorcerer’s Stone”? I don’t think he composed ANY new music for “Chamber of Secrets”!

Guestcmon, dude…YOU may know that….I may know that…but to the rest of the masses who only listen to hip hop and rap or whatever? they don’t know the difference.

GuestI will say, as a John Williams fan, that I was disappointed with “Chamber of Secrets.” There may have been new music cues laid out for the specific scenes, but yes, they amounted to all the old music rehashed. Some cues were even precisely the same, easily recognizable from the “Sorceror’s Stone” soundtrack. Sad, sad, sad.

GuestI really loved the Phoenix theme from The Chamber Of Secrets, at least that was new, and I guess, only welcomed on my part.

GuestI wish i could say i’m a huge fan of Howard Shore and Lord of the RIngs, but i’m not really…although Two Towers had some better themes in it. I only like Shore’s “The Fly” and “Ed Wood.” That’s about it…oh , and maybe “Seven.”

GuestApart from the fact BIG FISH or HULK haven’t been nominated – and since I didn’t hear the former yet, I can’t really complain – I’d say these Grammy nominations are overall pretty satisfying.
– CHAMBER OF SECRETS has been to me John Williams’ best two scores from the past… what ? Say, from the past hundred years. The other one being MINORITY REPORT which is splendid. Chamber of Secrets has plenty of enjoyable themes like the Fawkes one Nat pointed out. It’s an enjoyable score to listen to on its own.
– CATCH ME… I don’t know. This score falls among the John Williams scores that give me headaches when I listen to them, like 98% of what Williams did. Except the titles, it sounded rather bland within the film.
– THE HOURS : Philip Glass will never obtain enough nominations and awards that would show his true genius (I could say exactly the same of Danny’s genius though). However for those already familiar to Glass’ music there’s little new here. I’d say it’s a wonderful ‘best of’ of his music, after all.
– THE TWO TOWERS : Wonderful. This is such an awe-inspiring accomplishment. I’d say Shore deserves the Grammy this year.
– SEABISCUIT : I didn’t hear it. To me there’s nothing appealing in Randy’s music so wasn’t attracted to this score. Maybe I lost something… But then again, rather than seeing a Newman nominated… Thomas is the one who’d deserve it. FINDING NEMO is the most refreshing and original piece of work I heard this year.

GuestThe music Randy Newman wrote is bland, predictable and very forgetable. He shouldn’t be in that list.
