Dawg Man
ParticipantSince Danny did Red Dragon, this is kind of related…
I used to live in Europe and to pass my time I read all kinds of books for fun. My favorites were those by Thomas Harris, who created Hannibal Lecter. I loved Red Dragon and I loved Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal was “okay”) so I was a little disapointed to read such negative reviews about the newest movie, Hannibal Rising. Apparently as the story goes, Harris loved the movie version of Red Dragon so much (he hated Manhunter) that he took it upon himself to write another book on Hannibal as well as a screenplay. He’s never done that before so, up until I read the reviews, I was genuinely excited.
The other day I debated whether or not to even see the movie because of all the negative reviews… but I was bored and my curiosity won out. My friend and I went and sat in the back of this screening, not expecting much. And…
It turns out the movie was good. In fact, we thought it was quite good. My friend isn’t even a fan and he loved it. I still regard Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs as higher, but the visuals in this movie were so much better than in any of the others by far (frames from the snowy war scenes and the french countryside could double as still photos) and the story-line was top notch stuff too (to me at least). I love WWII movies and movies that struggle for that “Golden Age” look. It beats the hell out of the contemporary crap that’s shoved down our throats continuously these days.
Hannibal Rising isn’t the best movie in the world — It certainly has it’s flaws — but I don’t think it was a bad movie. Most of you probably hated it or are split on it but I love dark movies like this, and it’s not the first time I’ve given the finger to the critics (example being Scrooged).
I checked Yahoo for USER reviews compared to critic reviews and came away with that same feeling of being duped by the critics into thinking it was shit (Yahoo users: B- and Yahoo-compiled critic reviews: D+).
I liked it. Tell me what you think.

ParticipantI have not seen the movie, but I have read the book. Though I felt it was certainly the most generic of Mr. Harris’ works (it is a simple revenge story, after all), I did feel it was superior to HANNIBAL, which was very over-the-top and ludicrous to the point of being funny (the book was even more bizarre than the film!). That being said, I hope that Mr. Harris’ next novel will be a Lecter-free one, seeing as how the character has been exhausted. And given his pace, we’ll only have to wait until 2012.

KeymasterNo interest in seeing this. Time to mine a different character, this one is stripped bare.

ParticipantWrong! Now’s the time for a crossover! Hannibal vs. Leatherface or Hannibal vs. The Golden Girls!

ParticipantI think this should be the last one too, but I’m glad they made it.

ParticipantI totally agree with Dawg Man.
I saw the movie two days ago, and it really is worth seeing. It’s not the best, but it’s way better than Hannibal.
The storyline isn’t that amazing, and there’s no surprises, but the real power of this movie is the photography. The images, the colors, the main vibe of the picture is wonderfull. That being said, I really think it’s time to move on, and stop writing or shooting films about Hannibal…

ParticipantI was never a fan of the Silence of The Lambs in the first place so you can imagine how I never cared for these se-, pre-, post-, ante-, reverse-quels…

ParticipantWa-hell. SILENCE was made – what – almost 20 years ago now? Give Hollywood time; I’m sure they remake it, thus continuing the franchise.

ParticipantThis reminds me that I might live long enough to see a Star Wars Remake…
After all it took them about 45 years to remake the classic King Kong.
Can you image them Remaking A New Hope? At least they won’t remake “Halloween”…
Oh wait…
THEY ARE!!!!
