Guest“[Guillermo] Del Toro, who was very pleased and excited about the risky and innovative decisions being made by [Marco] Beltrami for the film’s score, noted that the music reminded him somewhat of a “Bernard Herrmann action score”, an appropriate assessment of Beltrami’s work. Overall, the music sounds great, and anyone who was disappointed that Danny Elfman didn’t land this gig should be reassured that Beltrami was in fact the right man for the job all along.”
FULL INTERVIEW:
http://www.countingdown.com/movies/5142/news?item_id=3399039This came from an exclusive CountingDown.com interview with Hellboy composer Marco Beltrami. Read the whole thing to get a gist of the score. We could hear either a really good superhero score or a Mark Mancini-ish copy of previous Elfman and Hermann works. Was there even a point where Danny Elfman would have signed on? This doesn’t seem like his kind of movie. I’m gonna see Hellboy, anybody else?

GuestI’ve never even heard of it. If it’s another mediocre superhero movie, I’ll never see it.

GuestI dig comics–but I know absolutely nothing about Hellboy. In all honesty, I am fully prepared for it to suck. But, if you go by the preview–and mind you, previews can be tricky–it looks like it might be all right. (I would say better than all right–but if I get my hopes up too high, I’ll go in expecting too much).
I don’t mind so much that Danny isn’t attached to it. I mean, yeah, it’s snazzy when the boy scores something like Batman or Spider-man (and I’m leaving out the Hulk–because while the music was good, the movie wasn’t), but it would be a shame to see him get stereotyped.

GuestI know of Hellboy. I have a friend who’s excited about the film. I ask him for an explanation of the dopy tile (he’s called Hellboy, but he’s clearly a man), and I just get frowned at.
In the interview, Beltrami says that Del Toro let him write whatever he wanted, which is always a good sign. If the score sounds like Herrmann action music… than great. I say plie-on more of Herrmann.

GuestHellboy and Van Helsing are yet another League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Underworld – crappy movies with CGI and overly-high concepts for period pieces. God forbid if Dawn of the Dead turns out to be the better of these in 2004…

GuestYou’ve seen Van Helsing and Hellboy? Wow.
Van Helsing could suck, because the director does, but I really think Hellboy has a chance at being really good. I have a lot of faith in Del Toro.
If you want a really good peek at the movie, you can go to Best Buy (where I work, btw) and if you buy a movie, cd, or videogame you get a Hellboy Sneak Preview DVD for free. It actually looks really, really good.
What scares me though is that I said the same thing about LXG, and LXG turned out to be my least favorite movie of the year. And I saw Mona Lisa Smile and Gigli.

GuestDude! There is a girl who can toss blue fire! What else do you need in a movie?!?
Knight (Still a kid with low standards at heart)
Oh, and I liked LXG and Mona Lisa Smile FYI. I acually thought (don’t bite my head off, just my opinion) LXG was better than HULK.

GuestTake it easy… Not only “Hellboy” is simply one of the best and most imaginative comic books around today – trust me, Elfman and Burton fans, you WILL love it – but Guillermo Del Toro is a great director (he did the wonderful “Chronos”, “The Devil’s Backbone” and “Blade II”, far more superior than the first “Blade”) and Mike Mignola, the guy who created Hellboy and who makes the books supervised this production and pretty much designed everything in the movie. And it looks great. Hellboy is the only superhero who’s a self confessed Tom Waits fan, so I love him. And the stories are great, too, very much inspired by Lovecraft and Poe, very dark and very funny. I’m sure this has everything to be the best superhero movie since Burton’s two “Batman” films.

Guest“LXG was better than HULK”
LXG is the 2nd worst “superhero” movie I’ve ever seen (1st goes to Daredevil). It is so bad, it isn’t even funny. I can’t believe you think it’s better than the Hulk!
March 13, 2004 at 3:42 am #48793Anonymous
GuestNever seen a Del Toro movie, but Hellboy looks good. LXG was pretty good, not the best, but not bad. Daredevil could have been better. Van Helsing looks good for 3 reasons: it’s a Stephen Sommers film, ILM did the CGI, and Hugh Jackman (the coolest superhero ever) is in it. Have faith, people.
And for the record, Hulk sucked (aside from the music).

GuestI think the problem with most comic book movies is this: Hollywood has re-hashed so many ideas, that they can’t come up with anything original. So, they need a quick fix. And that’s what comic based movies are.
I mean, if you flip through a comic, you’ve got something that’s already in script format, and as close to a storyboard as you can get. Problem is, the people they put in charge half of the time, have absolutely no idea who and/or what these characters are. And that’s where the problems come in.
Comic book movies, when done right (like Tim’s Batman movies, Spider-man, The Crow, etc….) are fantastic. Unfortunately, when they’re done wrong, they’re done really wrong–so wrong, in fact, it’s unforgivable.

GuestI didn’t think Hulk was all that bad, actually. I was expecting something horrible, but it actually wasn’t, in my opinion. There were some very beautiful scenes.

GuestNot only is LXG the worst superhero movie I’ve ever seen (and yes, I’ve seen Daredevil and very much agree on its suckiness), but it just plain sucks as a movie. I hate Stuart Townsend. He’s like a magnet for poop (except, of course, Charlize Theron).
Oh yeah, and Stephen Sommers sucks too.

GuestWell, if you are all so smart and lucid on what sucks and what doesn’t, then let me tell you this : you suck !

Even when movies are bad (and it’s case for Daredevil and LXG – Hulk had a true artist’s vision behind it, you can’t compare it with the others), I find it really childish to describe them only as “sucking movies”. One of the great things in becoming an adult is to learn how to express and argue our emotions.

GuestMust everything I say on this damn board be judged? Maybe I don’t feel like explaining things and just feel comfortable enough to imagine you guys would be content with that. I don’t go on the IMDB message boards for a reason.

GuestI agree with Nuno. Del Toro’s a master – “Cronos” is superb. Hey, I didn’t even mind reading subtitles – which is really something for me. I enjoyed “The Devil’s Backbone” well enough, but really loved “Cronos” with an unholy passion. I was fairly obsessed with it for a period of, oh, two months. I’ve got faith in the man…

Guest“Van Helsing” could be good. Then again, I’m biased due to my high-octane fancy for Hugh Jackman. If only the Wolverine hairstyle would catch on with the Midwestern lads… Sorry kids, I despised LXG. Connery’s death scene took too long – 2 seconds too long, in fact.
March 14, 2004 at 3:06 pm #48812Anonymous
GuestI was watching LXG with some friends, and I over heard this:
“Man, what is up with all these 2-hour-plus superhero movies lately?”
“It’s been a half an hour.”
March 14, 2004 at 9:14 pm #48819Anonymous
GuestLike I said, just my opinion, I thought it was an ok movie. I TOTALLY agree on the Daredevil point though, gotta be one of the worst films I have ever seen. It SUCKS!!!
Oh, and who said that we are all adults here?
Knight (Or have to act like them for that matter)

GuestThis has become the thread of hate, it seems!… you know what… you all suck!!! MWAAHAHAHAHA!
*ahem*… yes.
I’ve seen only the first half of LXG [damn] – and I really quite enjoyed it, except for the hammy acting and the bare-faced obviousness and predictablility of who the traitor was going to be.

GuestWell, this is why whenever I tend to either point out something is snazzy or not, I try and make clear that it’s my opinion and nothing more. Personally, I don’t care what other people like or dislike, because it doesn’t effect me at all. I mean, it’s not like I directed the movie(s) or anything.
And, I usually try and not point out the things I think are crappy, because I figure any effort at all is better than doing nothing. (For the record though, I just thought The Hulk dragged on forever. That, and I tend to be rather fond of the old school method of finding a guy with muscles and dipping him in a few coats of green paint. But eh, like I said, that’s just me).
March 15, 2004 at 11:17 am #48849Anonymous
GuestI have to agree with you, there… I still haven’t seen Hulk, but I do hate the fact that he’s totally CG. It may be “tacky” by today’s standards to paint up an American Arnie, but I reckon it would’ve been more universally accepted, and with movie techniques today, and the spectacular make-up that goes on (ie. Mystique, in X-Men & X2 – stunning!) it could still look cool, and not cheapo 70s.
And, also for the record, my least favourite superhero movie (from the ones I’ve seen) has gotta be Daredevil. I think Dantz’s opinion quite matches my own…
“is so bad, it isn’t even funny.” Ben Affleck… a superhero? yeugh… as a point of interest, by the way… all you ben Affleck haters (and there really are a lot of them – poor guy) watch Changing Lanes. I loved that film, and Ben did a good job, there. Samuel L. Jackson does his typical talking like a philosopher/god thing. It still works, and I still love it – even now… even after Pulp Fiction.
Well, I’ve trailed off a little here. What was that about Hellboy?

GuestI began by talking about the misic, but the discussion really went to how much everyone hates Daredevil and LXG. But going back to where we left off, I think that Ben Affleck is one of the finest actors out there. I’m not ashamed to admit that he’s my favorite actor. It wasn’t his fault Daredevil sucked, it was newcomer Mark Steven Johnson. Ben Affleck puts on brilliant performances, and he’s such a smart guy too.
