I was just wondering when Part 2 of the “Elfman Orchestration Fact” is coming. Not only am I the biggest Elfman fan in the world, [sorry Ryan I am, get over it :) ] but I think that he writes the best strings in the business. I’d love to hear an orchestrators analysis. I’m sure you are a busy man, with lots of thing to do, but the harp post was one of the best things I ever read. (no offence, everyone else on this site) I’m almost embarrassed to say this, but I always thought that the instrument for The Penguins theme was a re-tuned clavichord. Oh well, I’m a moron. Keep up the good work.

I’d planned to do that weekly but low and behold things happen and i get busy with things. I’ll do it sometime soon. I’m thinking about brass and strings.

I’m currently writing fully orchestrated music to Stephen King’s THE DARK TOWER book series. I haven’t “written” anything before other than piano numbers and such and so forth but nothing of this magnatude. It’ll give yo ua head ache. I’m hoping that I’ll do well orchestrating something this big on my own although I think I’ll be fine with it. I’ve studied like a sexless nerd for the past five years anyway (note: like a sexless nerd doesn’t mean “sexless nerd” — that’s an expression, fyi).

This music (which I’m thinking of forming into symphonietta) is going to be inspired by all my favorite things, the Morricone Spaghetti Westerns, The Bernard Herrmann brood and the fast/gothic Danny Elfman underbelly. God, I hope it goes over well. I don’t want to waste people’s time. I think I’ve found a theme that works well enough.

Anyway, I’m busy doing that but I’ll be finding time to write that little article. Hell, I may even put up a site of them. I don’t know.

    Cheers.

Excellent sources for inspiration in your current endeavors (Morricone & Herrmann), but remember to make the compositions your own (i.e. try to give your work a unique style). I’m sure that my advice is without end, in that you have already developed an especial sound, but I had to give it anyway.

I wish I could have someone score the stories that I write (I have one that would lend itself well to the musical style of old radio dramas), but on that same note, I wish I could just finish writing the stories I write.

Best of luck to you. I’m sure that Mr. Kings work will provide adequate stimulation.

    Yes, good luck, Dawg!

And that idea of a site about orchestration is geeeenius! Pleease do that! I’d absolutely LOVE to have a site that has a community of people much like this one, however, talking about such a specific subject as orchestration. Perhaps there could be different sections, each one ran by a different person, and each one, about a different aspect of film composing. There are enough musical minds here… I’m sure that if we rallied together, we could maybe get something good going! It’d probably be a very popular resource for budding composers such as ourselves.
