Participanthe already worked with raimi on “quick and the dead” and did a fantastic job so anyone know if he’s one of the people being considered.
i don’t think christopher young will be picked since he’s not that goodMay 25, 2005 at 1:31 am #54053Ryan Keaveney
KeymasterIt’s Young.

ParticipantBesides, Raimi has a preexisting working relationship with Chris Young. I’m still pissed about the whole thing, but at least there’s much to look forward to from Danny still. As for Alan Silvestri, Spider-Man is a bit too big for what I believe he can handle. He hasn’t done any work on it at all, whereas Chris Young and John Debney would be more qualified. Actually I’d like to see Debney replace Danny rather than Young.

ParticipantI agree with spider-fan that Debney would be better than young. I mean, I really like both young and Debney but Debney would be my personaly choice. As for Alan Silvestri, he really doesn’t have the capability of satisfying fans of the spiderman music because of his style of composing. What about John Ottman doing Spiderman 3? His style of composing is very similar to Danny Elfman’s as an afterproduct. I mean there was a rumor that Danny Elfman and John Ottman were enemies but personally I think Ottman can sustain the momentum and intensity that Elfman put into his music. I say that if I had to pick one person for spiderman 3 it would be Ottman, Debney, and then Young. Ottman has the potential to make great superhero music as he has for many different other superhero movies. His X-men themes show that he is able to create great themes and mix them greatly very well but obviously not as great as Danny Elfman. Danny Elfman always makes great villian themes and Ottman for sure isn’t as good as Danny there. Post here your comments about Ottman if he were to compose Spiderman 3.

ParticipantJohn Debney is a typical yesman to me; he does what the producers ask him to, without trying to elaborate a musical world of his own. Sorry to be so radical but I hate to see that kind of approach rewarded while many talented composers never get their chance in the industry because they try new things, they try to develop thematics through their works. That’s what a composer like Christopher Young does and, if Danny doesn’t compose the music for S-M3, I’d be delighted if they offer him the chance to finally express himself in a summer blockbuster (even though he’ll have to use Danny’s themes). It would a kind of recognition that he deserves…
Edit : about Ottman, I think he has talent but I find his music too predictable, too obvious. It is really effective and entertaining but his work for X², as an instance, doesn’t have half of Kamen’s X-men’ depth…
May 25, 2005 at 8:11 pm #54057mike
Participantchris young already had a chance at a summer blockbuster with “The Core” and the music in that movie was bland, boring and cliche.
i honestly don’t know what raimi sees in himMay 25, 2005 at 8:17 pm #54058mike
Participantwell yeah ottman is kinda moving up in the wolrd of superhero scores, he’s doing “fantastic four” now and “superman” is coming up so he might be a great choice. but i don’t think he’ll do it or even raimi will consider picking him
i mean the only good music in X2 was the “jean grey” theme but apart from that it was pretty forgettable music.
maybe when he does a great job with fantastic four i may change my mind, but for now i don’t think he’s even worhty to wipe elfman’s bumi like Silversti’s style of composing, his score for “van helsing” was the only good thing about that movie

KeymasterI think Ottman has handled enough super-hero franchises, what with X2, FANTASTIC FOUR and SUPERMAN.

Participantspiderman is not too big for silversti. most of the movies he works on are big budget hollywood crap, so he has a lot of experience in that sense.
john debney is better than young, but it’d be nice if they went with silversti and debney just like the way chris nolan went with zimmer and newton on batmanMay 25, 2005 at 8:22 pm #54061mike
Participantoh that’s depressing in a lot of ways. hope they get debney to help him out cuz he needs it
May 25, 2005 at 8:24 pm #54062mike
Participanti love ottman and all but i just don’t think he can handle the wall crawler.
apart from the jean grey theme X2 had a pretty bland scorejust my opinion though, i’m sure lots of people disagree

ParticipantDoes it really matter who score’s Spider-Man 3?
I think whoever can be the most obsequious to the director’s temp-track is the ideal pick, as far as the film makers are concerned.
All the abovementioned composers are suitable for scoring a Spider-Man film — all of them — Debney especially — are completely capable of giving a director precisely what he wants.
Alan Silvestri, judging from The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing, also has some wild-range for a Spider-Man score.
If I were in charge, I’d give Steve Bartek a crack at Spider-Man. He’s kind of half of Danny Elfman, anyway.
May 26, 2005 at 2:21 am #54066Spider-Fan
ParticipantYeah, I think Bartek even contributed to the Spidey 2 score. Debney proved his creativity with his “Passion” score, but the statement that he’d do what the director told him to do is probably true. Ottman’s a good superhero composer, but I don’t think Spidey’s up his alley. Sam Raimi’s gonna stick with his usual crew, i.e. Young, Bartek, maybe LoDuca, or Debney. Of course, nobody wil be able to score Spidey with the intensity and depth that Danny did. I still want him on board. He’s probably the top reason why I love those movies.
Also, let’s not criticize Ottman for being stuck with superhero scores. Danny did Spider-Man, Darkman, Batman, Hulk…most critics refer to him as the “comic score guy.” And we love him and those scores still.

ParticipantFor some reason, this remids me of the situation (musically) when Goldenthal took over Batman Forever. With fantastic results. I can’t wait, but is is still sad we won’t get another Elfman villain’s theme.
May 27, 2005 at 12:48 am #54076mike
Participanti think danny’s stereotyped more for his goofy scores than the his superhero scores
that’s why he “black beauty” and “dead presidents” i guess, to show people that he had rangeMay 27, 2005 at 12:56 am #54079mike
Participantyeah but bartek won’t do it since he’d probably consider that stabbing elfman in the back
May 27, 2005 at 1:03 am #54080mike
Participantwell his score for batman forever sucked. it was nothing but noise
his score for batman and robin on the other hand was pure genuisMay 27, 2005 at 2:41 am #54082Drax
ParticipantWhichever composer they get for future “Spider-Man” movies (in this case, Christopher Young), I can safely predict they’ll just track Elfman’s previous music over new scenes just because the producers liked it in the temp track.
It’s a shame because I’ve never heard of this happening before the “Star Wars” prequels. Did you hear anything recorded for “Batman” heard in “Batman Returns”? I don’t think so.
May 27, 2005 at 3:08 am #54087Spider-Fan
ParticipantWith Spider-Man being a such huge studio franchise, we were lucky to see someone as skilled as Sam Raimi given the helm of it. Back in the “Batman” days, studios didn’t have as much influence as they do now because there’s more money in it now. It’s kind of sad to see creativity being taken away, but that’s the way the business runs. Especially for Sony.

Or better yet, maybe we’ll hear some of the unused Elfman cues from SM2 rearranged for SM3…haha…
Supposedly they won’t start actual filming until early next year even though pre-production work is happening now. I know its a longshot but there is still a part of me that is holding out hope that Danny will somehow be involved in SM3 in the end….there’s still a long way to go and stranger things have happened.

Hmm, can you give an example?
May 28, 2005 at 3:41 am #54099Spider-Fan
ParticipantUm, Spider-Man 2? Also stuff like Planet of the Apes where they wanted Danny to action-up the score. The studios control eveything.
May 28, 2005 at 7:11 pm #54102ooshmaster
ParticipantYou know, ever since I had read that it was officially confirmed that Young was hired to score Spider-Man 3, I thought about the possibility that Don Davis could do it.
May 30, 2005 at 6:04 am #54119TenderLumpling
ParticipantUm, Spider-Man 2?
As I recall, the tracking and multiple composers were a direct result of Sam’s inability to work with his former composer, Danny Elfman. Sony had shinola to do with the Spider-Man 2 score.
Also stuff like Planet of the Apes where they wanted Danny to action-up the score.
When did this happen? Elfman himself said that “if anyone was unhappy in any way, they never told me. We not only didn’t I rescore anything, but I canceled two sessions that I had been holding just in case we did need extra time and we were finished ahead of schedule.”

Participantburton admitted on the “apes” commentary that he wishes they had tried some more stuff with the music. so i guess he wasn’t that happy with it
