GuestI know that this review is not very recent, but I just read it and had to post it here. It was from rottentomatoes.com on The Nightmare Before Christmas, and this little ‘tidbit’ on Elfman really got my hackles up:
”The blandness of Danny Elfman’s songs represents The Nightmare Before Christmas’ most serious failing. With the exception of one or two, these tunes are uniformly unmemorable. They certainly lack the “hummability” of Alan Menken’s work for Disney’s recent animated releases. Nothing in Nightmare is close to “Be Our Guest” (Beauty and the Beast) or “Friend Like Me” (Aladdin).”

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/click/movie-1048889/reviews.php?critic=creamcrop&sortby=default&page=1&rid=33697I still seethe while reading this. I’m sorry, but those songs were WONDERFUL!!! I hum them wherever I go! *foams at the mouth* Grr…
But, on a lighter note, and also from rottentomatoes.com on the same subject, I read this rather pleasing paragraph:
“As for a voice, Jack has two: Chris Sarandon’s when he speaks, and Danny Elfman’s when he sings. Elfman has created yet another outstanding orchestral score, and also contributed 10 songs that are more theatrically solid than recent million-selling Disney numbers. There’s depth to Elfman’s score — and cleverness (listen for the minor-key “Jingle Bells” in Halloweentown).”

*smiles and sighs happily*
I’m glad that someone thinks the same way of Elfman’s work on this amazing film.
Cheers,

GuestThe people who don’t like him…. are jealous. Because he didn’t have years of training or a college degree. That’s all, he’s plain and simple talented.

Guestactually i prefer that not everyone knows him or likes him…if he was too mainstream/commercial then i’d be worried and have to change my ways and be normal instead of weird, to offset the general public…

GuestExactly, and that’s why it’s fun to make fun of people who aren’t like us.
