    Not much to do with Danny, though there was some weak speculation of his involvement with X-Men 3 when collaborator Brett Ratner became its director. SuperheroHype is reporting that John Debney might be the film’s composer:

    IESB tells us they caught up with Sin City composter John Debney who mentioned he’ll likely be involved with the sequel and that he may score X-Men 3 as well:

    He says Robert Rodriguez has mentioned that he expects him to also come back and work on the sequel.

    Is there another comic book adaptation that he’s like to tackle in the near future?

    To our surprise he mentioned that he has been talking to Fox about working on X-Men 3 but it’s too early to say if he is officially on board.

    Interesting development, considering Lalo Schifrin was expected to score the film. It is also interesting to note that John Debney and Danny Elfman are often collaborators, and their last project “together” was technically Spider-Man 2. Will Debney have the right stuff for something with such thematic expectations as X-Men 3? Personally I think John Ottman should return to the amazing themes he created for X2.

    I must disagree; Ottman wrote a generic, vulgar superhero score. He tried to match both Elfman’ and Williams’ styles in the genre and only offered poor Ottman.

    Kamen wrote the most original score for a superhero (yes, Batman and Superman included !) and never had the credit he deserved while Ottman simplistic work was praised. I guess “catchy themes” will always be more popular that interesting and complex orchestration work. That’s what John Williams did to a whole generation that I don’t feel close with, even though it’s mine…

    Anyway….go Lalo !

    I agree with you on that Kamen’s score was better…it was awesome!! But I disagree with your statement about John Williams. Alot of his music is very complex and it is amazing. Him and Elfman are the film composer masters.

    I really wonder where Kamen would have taken the series…but I guess we will never know (I still can’t believe he died)…

    Anyhoo, I think Debney is a FANTASTIC composer, and would be really interested to see what he might do (if he does it). I for one really enjoyed Ottman’s score for X2, generic as it was :D.

    As for Williams, he is a master, that is for sure, but he is not “THE” master IMHO. There are so many talented composer out there, I don’t really think we can crown a king of the castle (although I am sure most people here would automatically scream out Elfman).

    For anyone who is into this film though, does anyone know what the hell happened with the Kitty Pryde character? In the first film, she was about 16, in the second, she was 12 and now we have yet ANOTHER age jump to about 22 in X3? Who was the genius behind that?

    Kamen probably wouldn’t have scored X2. That job would have gone to John Ottman anyway. Ottman would have worked on the first one had he not been committed to directing, composing, and editing “Urban Legends: Final Cut.” Ottman and Bryan Singer are buddies. From what I heard, Singer was not at all happy with Kamen’s work. I thought it was an average score that was inferior to Ottman’s themes.

    Ottman’s X-2 score wasn’t very Elfman, it was more in the Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams tradition, which is a very enjoyable one.

    I agree, Kamen wrote the most original score for superheroes.
    Where other composers would envigorate an audience with wonderful and melodic themes, Kamen proved he could achieve new depths of banality with unidentifiable, forgettable, and unmoving pieces of music.

    The crap Kamen did for X-Men did nothing for the movie, much less its audience.
    In the context of the X-Men film score the music’s vagueness is its only complexity.
    It’s one of the most unfortunate superhero film scores ever, it makes the movie even more boring than it already is.

    Ottman’s score to X-2 was fantastic, it’s a shame he won’t be continuing with X-3.

    I think both X2 and Fantastic 4, orchestrally, sounds very similar to Spider-Man, especially their tender music.

    Ottman’s score to X-2 was fantastic, it’s a shame he won’t be continuing with X-3.

    You know, I listened to some of X2 on the DVD’s music featurette, and then put Batman: Mask of the Phantasm on the old headphones, and X2, by comparison, sounds almost inept and inadequate. Shirley Walker’s score for that film is so symphonic and grandiose. That is a real score! If there’s anyone who deserves another go at a big superhero score, it’s she.

    Debney is amazing, i’d love it if he scored X3. Ottman is mediocre at best.
