GuestTaking the format of the “is music music” question. In music many times do composers use the ideas of other composers’ works. So my question to everyone is:
Is plagiarism plagiarism?

plagiarism=plagiarismI think plagiarism is ok if it’s done sparingly, and if it’s done right. There’s nothing wrong with borrowing ideas from the best once in a while. But there is no question as to whether plagiarism is plagiarism … it just is! Of course, there are different degrees of plagiarism, if that’s what you’re talking about…

GuestThis brings up something I brought up in my “is music music?” thread… simply that music evolves, rather than chops and changes. So, naturally, we often emulate stuff in other music we hear – Nothing is totally original.

GuestUnless it is the exact same thing with someone else’s name on it. That’s plagiarism.

GuestRipping off someone else’s work and knowing that you’re doing it, and taking credit for it–well, I’d say that’s plagiarism. But using someone else’s concepts or theories or style or whatever–for inspiration, well that’s different. Telling the difference between the two. Well, that’s what’s tricky.
