GuestIs that true in http://www.bluntinstrument.org.uk/elfman/filmography/batman/index.html
That …you can hear the alarm of an orchestra member’s wrist-watch going off at track 18 (2’24”)?
…it is rumored that Elfman came up with Batman’s motif from hearing the engines of the plane he was on firing up?September 4, 2004 at 4:11 pm #52225Anonymous
GuestYou can’t miss the alarm clock sound !
For the Batman’s theme origins, they are so many stories about it that I guess it’s not impossible…September 4, 2004 at 4:46 pm #52227Anonymous
GuestI had heard that he came up with the Batmna theme after driving home from a visit to the Gotham set in London. The airplane story is a lot more fun, though.

P.S. Just kidding, but it must have at least been subconscious.

GuestWell, there’s the story with Elfman hearing the theme in the plane flying him back to LA after visiting the Batman set. He had to run into the toilet to record it on tape (he was afraid to forget it). There’s another version of that one where he found the theme right after he entered the Batman set. Another told us that it was in a car after the visit.
I also read an interview where he said he really found it in a studio: he had the notes, the atmosphere in his mind but had to work hard to get the right rhythm and orchestration.
Finally, there is also him, waking in sweat in the middle of the night, picking up the phone and asking Shirley Walker to write it for him ! We sure like this version around here…

However – wasn’t it Prince who wrote that theme?

Guestif i recall, he wasn’t talking about the batman theme per se… he said he came up with the ‘decent into mystery’ track while in the airplane bathroom.

GuestI saw an interview with Elfman on a PBS documentary produced in 1994. (Not so recent. ) Also interviewed were Jerry Goldsmith, Randy Newman (who may have been the host too), Basil Poldorius (sp?… sorry about butchering your last name Basil) However I’ve seen it replayed before on TCM in which he told the airplane bathroom story. In his own energenic way. He was talking specifically about the Batman theme. Voicing the intruments into a hand held taperecorder “This is the baseline. This is the melody. This is the counter melody.” All while the air plane engines were roaring in the background. I agree with previous posts. This seems to be the most romantic version of the story.
