GuestJohnny Depp has become the surprise front-runner to play Willy Wonka in the remake of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. Filmmaker Tim Burton was originally said to be deciding between Christopher Walken – who worked with Burton in Sleepy Hollow – and Michael Keaton – his star in Batman: Returns and Beetlejuice – for the role. But the success of Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl and past collaborations with Burton now has Hollywood sources putting Depp at the front of the race. The highly anticipated movie begins filming next year for a 2005 release.

GuestIt’s IMDB, can we trust it?
Knight (That would be AWESOME if it happened though)

GuestVariety has said the same thing, so it’s a good potential (thank God, as Depp would be incredible!)

Guestit’s not an imdb news; it read this on many reliable sites. So, i guess we can trust it.

GuestEven if it’s just a rumor, I don’t care. I like the sound of it and want it to be true. I’ve decided to trust it no matter where it was read.
After Pirates, I’ve decided I want Depp in EVERY role.

GuestI think we should give the IMDB a little more respect.
Sure they get some things wrong sometimes, but it must be tough to keep track of every movie, television series, and video release in such a constantly changing business as the entertainment industry.
Personally, I love the IMDB. Without it I would be stuck on relying on an out-of-date video guide book to see what writers and directors have done previously.
And Depp would make an excellant Willy Wonka. No doubt about that.

GuestPammy – I’m with you on wanting Depp in every role
In fact, the phrase “snack cake” is useful in describing my feelings toward him…and now there’s talk that he just may be the ruler of a gigantic chocolate palace… *Ahem*However, I’m a little surprised that Walken isn’t the front-runner. Then again, he would probably scare the kiddies away…and since it is primarily billed as a “family film,” I can see Depp being a more marketable actor in that respect.

GuestLike I said in an earlier post, Depp would be a great choice. I’ve got a lot of respect for the dude, managing as he has to sustain a decent career full of interesting characters despite his good looks. (As opposed to someone like Matthew McConnahay, who’s succeeded BECAUSE of his good looks)
It’s good to see you back, E…where’ve you been?

GuestCute as he is, it’s not just looks with Depp. I think he is just brilliant. I’ve always thought he was good. He picks a diversity of roles and can pretty much pull them all off. I just adore him.
He was just too perfect in Pirates.
But yeah, I can see the snack cake thing too, after I look past the talent.

GuestPammy – Well said. His facial expressions in “Pirates” were fantastic; not every actor can pull that off the way Depp did.

GuestWell I remember Mr. Burton saying about Depp in Edward ‘he had that whole silent film actor thing going, he could say so much without saying a word’*.
Knight (*Those are my second hand words, I can’t remember exactly what he said, or acually that could have been Elfman! Help here.)

Guesti just wanted to share that i bought a Wonka Bar today and they are doing some kind of golden ticket thing … Depp as Wonka is a great idea ( i just saw Pirates and it completely changed my mind. Depp did such an awesome job

GuestI’m a little disappointed here. I haven’t seen ‘Pirates’ so far, yet in the trailers Depp indeed looks incredible.
What’s sad is, it’s years since we haven’t seen Michael Keaton in a major role. The last ones I recall of were ‘Multiplicity’ and ‘Desperate Measures’. Both of these films were poor in comparison with Beetlejuice or Batman. I would have loved to see him again in a Tim Burton film.

Guesti agree with u Squeezir…Depp is a great actor (in fact, he’s one of the best i know) but i really really wanted to see Keaton in a major role again.

GuestUm…am I the only one who thinks that, when you read the BOOK, Johnny Depp does not fit the Wonka description in the slightest? If Depp really ends up being cast, I may skip the movie entirely.
Even Gene Wilder was not what the book described, but there’s no topping his wry, dry, nonchalant attitude as the hazardous candy maker.

GuestSqueezir – ***DISCLAIMER*** this comment has nothing to do with Elfman, and everything to do with Keaton: I think he’s a great comedic actor. I – for one – thoroughly enjoy “Multiplicity,” and think Keaton is the man for that role…or roles, whichever you prefer. Then again, there’s also the fact that I think “My Life” ends on a very unintentional, yet altogether hilarious note. (For those of you who laughed too, you know what I’m talking about. For those of you who think me a callous, unfeeling person because I did chortle, I plead no contest. It’s your perogative).
Even so, it really has been years since we’ve seen Keaton in a leading role – or any movie role, for that matter. Not to say that I’m a terribly well-informed person…but nevertheless, he hasn’t been in the public eye for quite a number of years.

GuestKeaton starred in Live from Baghdad, an excellent made-for-cable movie about CNN during the Gulf War.
They show it on HBO from time to time.

GuestPlease explain the “My Life” thing. I’m curious like a mug.

GuestHe was nominated for a Golden Globe for his excellent role in “Live from Baghdad” too.

Guest“He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his excellent role in “Live from Baghdad” too.”
Bart and Nat – thanks for the info on Keaton. It appears I was mistaken. (Then again, I don’t have HBO, nor do I own a TV, so that sort of explains it…) Is it available on DVD?
SleepyHello – I’ll email you about the “My LIfe” comment. No need to waste Ryan’s space talking about it.
