GuestWell i just caught a sneak peek at THE RING – and when I saw that Hanz Zimmer was doing the score, I felt a little dissapointed. So I watched the movie (it starts right way, no credits – nice touch) and I must say that I really enjoyed the music – I’ll probably get it. The only Zimmer score I’ve ever liked!
I would say that anyone who likes a good movie should see it, it delivers the goods and it’s artfully made – so nice to see horror movies made that have a little style to them…

GuestMore input, need more input…
Come on END, what was the score like stylistically (compared to other Zimmer scores, or other composers). I’m intrigued…

Question:
Isn’t ‘The Ring’ based on a series of Japanese films?October 18, 2002 at 3:14 am #42601Anonymous
GuestOnly Zimmer score you have liked? I can’t get enough of Gladiator (which he wrote with Lisa Gerrard). I blast The Battle almost everyday. What is wrong with you?!?!
Knight (Elfman will always be my fav though)

GuestKnight – I, too, am a fan of Gladiator…gotta love “The Might of Rome,” eh? However, yes, Elfman is still one of my favorites…*sheepish grin*

Guesthowdy. i just came out of the ring film, and not only am i shaking (hyper-sensitive. also cries during edward scissorhands.) but i also enjoyed the score.
one part that sticks out in my mind, (besides.. a few images..) is a string instrument part. not high pitch squeel of horror film string. kinda warm, but panicky strings. you know, like you are trying to be calm.. but you’re running out of time. (seven days..) it could have been played on a piano to the same effect.
also, a part that i remember is when she only sees a centipede but everyone in the theatre jumped because of a little synthesizer flicking. i love/hate (can’t decide) when film music makes me jump for no reason. how do composers create the feeling of dread? it must be very psychologial. hmm..
well, time for oingo boingo, i think!
lexi: she never sleeps. (well, I do. but she..)

GuestGoing to see “The Ring” in the next couple of days…if it’s as good as I’ve heard (and I LOVE a good scary movie…not slasher-movie-gory, but genuinely quiver-in-your-seat-and-sleep-with-the-light-on-for-weeks scary…that’s what I go for), I think it will be fantastic! Can’t wait to hear the score either! I’m expecting something very minimalistic, but I could be wrong. In either case, don’t tell me, because I want to be surprised

-E (who is immensely happy now that it’s officially Halloween season, and she can let the inner child out to play in the leaves, corn mazes, decorate pumpkins and drink apple cider – yeah!!! Yes, she’s definitely easy to please around this time of year…)

GuestNat –
Yeah, at least to my knowledge, “The Ring” is an adaptation of a Japanese film…I’m going to try to look up the exact name…

GuestMmmmm well, I can’t remeber exactly what I liked – but all I can say is that Zimmer’s music never really caight my ears before. I love the hellicopter shot following the car to the cabin, the violin music is very DOLORES CLAIBORNE-ish sounding. It seeemed to be more string than brass, the whole score that is.
I’ve never said that I know anything about music, just that I like what I like – and Zimmer’s music was pretty good. Any other thoughts?

Guestwow. everyobody on this board used to bash Zimmer to no end, but now everybody likes him? I find that kind of odd. I’ve always liked his music.
By the way, did anyone see INSOMNIA recently? I thought the Main Titles was beyond brilliant! The deep, low, brooding strings. . . aaah. Gotta’ love it!

GuestI’ve never bashed Zimmer on this board before! And I’ve read other posters who have been very favorable towards him, so I don’t think you should say “everyone on this board used to bash Zimmer”.

GuestYou must’ve been away during the Zimmer bash-a-thon topics because I distinctly remember it happening. Not everyone was a part of it, but a good majority was.

GuestBut when you say “everyobody on this board used to bash Zimmer to no end” you make it sound like it was, well, everybody. I don’t like entering into any thread that is an all-out bash fest, if only to mention that no composer deserves to have his whole output derided by statements like “he (or his music) s*cks!”.

GuestWell, obviously not everybody. I wasn’t part of it!

GuestI don’t distinctly remember a huge “Zimmer bash-a-thon,” but I *do* remember – quite distinctly – the “grab your torches and pitchforks” zeal that arose when discussing Horner’s merits (for some)/downfalls (for others). Either way, I’m staying out of it, as those men and women who compose are doing something that I have no idea how to approach. (Well, I do, but let’s just say that each and every effort has been simply abysmal…right now, I’m just happy with listening to and playing music…glory be to those who compose it!)

GuestSpeaking of “grabbing your torches and pitchforks,” where’s Dobbs? Anybody heard from him? Is he dead?! (I certainly hope not…) Aw, man, now I have to find somebody ELSE with whom to trade sarcastic banter…not that I’m against new contacts or anything, just that I kind of miss his trademark, “that’s what I said, and if you don’t like it, deal with it,” approach to answering posts…

Guesthave a thing for people more misirable than you, E?
..and how dare you say ‘glory be’ when it’s playing on my stereo? oh wait.. long breakdown’s on..i thought the ‘torches and pitchforks’ was just us raiding elfman’s place back when spiderman wasn’t coming out on a all-elfman disc.. my memory alludes me once again. well, we have all these free hours and all the research is on this board, so i go a-lookin’.
lexi: “we must take action!” – archer from warcraft II, my second favortite elf.. oh wait.. legolas..

Guest“have a thing for people more misirable than you, E?”
No, just that I thought his posts were entertaining…that’s all. And maybe I come across as it, but I’m really not miserable in the least. I actually “like my stupid life, just the way it is…” Yep; Boingo, Elfman scores, wind band music, books, intelligent friends, and a couple of really hip jobs (although they’re very draining at times…like any job, I imagine)…I’ve got nothing to complain about.
Oh yeah, and my niece thinks Legolas is “pretty.” LOL

GuestAhhhhhhh…..back to the music from THE RING, what did other people think of it? Is it like any other Zimmer score that I’m not aware of?

GuestErr…yeah…good decision, END

GuestActually I tried to find that soundtrack online for some sound clips, but I couldn’t find any. I couldn’t even find the soundtrack on amazon.com!
October 22, 2002 at 10:32 pm #42663Anonymous
Guest::eyes widen:: maybe they won’t release a soundtrack. or maybe it’ll be like spider-man and come out a month later.. i can’t wait a month, though. i’d give it seven days.. ::nosebleed::
lexi: well, it’s better than quoting boingo, right? right? aw..

GuestWell in all fairness, I really don’t think I paid enough attention to the over-all elements of the film, including the score. See, what I think happened is that I was expecting too much from The Ring, and was therefore disappointed that it didn’t scare the @!#$ out of me.
Now, don’t get me wrong–I enjoyed the film, especially how visually stunning it was. And, I enjoyed the plot and all (because let’s face it, I believe most children are evil). But it didn’t scare me, and I really was hoping it would.
Jeepers creepers–sometimes it isn’t fun being immune to most horror scare-tactics (or lack thereof).
