What type of Midi instrument are you using? I’m looking to buy a new midi keyboard cotroller with 88 ‘weighted’ keys with a pitch bend, and modulation wheel. Any one have any suggetions or warnings to look out for?

Phil, I have an M-Audio Keystation 49e. It’s not 88 keys, but it works for my miminal musical talents. I use it with GarageBand and it gives me no trouble. I’ve connected it to my PC, but trying to make music on a PC isn’t worth the aggrivation.

    Ryan,

I too have used Garage Band on a recent indie film I worked on. There were some pretty impressive sounds available to me. I let the producer chose the sounds and composed the music to the scenes, mostly live, occasionaly creating a multitrack.

I would like the option to swiitch from Mac to PC if need be (depending who’s computer I’m setting up at). My current keyboard allows me to do this. I’m looking for more ‘real time,’ BUTTONS, KNOBS, SWITCHES, FADERS, and DIAL interfaces with the computer–not having to stop and reconfigure in a menu.

I know that keyboard and it’s quite useful, but i think that it’s important for you the weighted keys option. For this I would recomend Yamaha P-90. The problem is that it hasn’t the pitch bend and modulation controllers (but remember that you can program it on the computer, but not the weighted keys).

If this option is not good for you, try on Kurzweil (all these keyboards i’m talking about are not master keyboards, usually they have some sound programs available). You can find the SP-88X. This is a GREAT keyboard with great piano sound, weighted keys and pitch and modulation (ribbon) controler. BUT, this is an expensive keyboard. Maybe about 1350$, not very expensive compared with PC2 or K2600 but, you were looking for a master keyboard…

I hope this will be useful for you.

    C ya! :)

I’ve got a m-audio Radium 61 and it pretty much sucks. It’s kind of like a toy and I spilled coke in the keys on one side and it has ants in it now. Soon i’ll be getting a cme uf7 which is 76 semi weighted keys but they also have an 88 hammer action version. http://www.8thstreet.com/prod.asp?pid=27465 $599 for 88 key midi controller, you can’t really get cheaper than that.
