I used to make all of my compositions just by using an old program called winjammer, and would then send the midi to a guy (I lost his e-mail) and he’d send me back my music with soundfonts switched with the crappy computer music. I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this sort of thing, or perhaps what he might have been doing. It’s not like he changed the music or redid it, it’s almost as if he just assigned soundfonts to each instrument and mixed it down to mp3. If anyone can point me in the right direction or mention the program, it would be really cool. I didn’t have a midi keyboard back then either, it was all done by mouse and using what theory I knew and listening back over and over and adding notes for more interesting sounds etc.

You’ll have to have a sequencer and a sampler. I use SONAR for my sequencer and Kontakt as my main sampler. Although, there are sample libraries out there that come with their own sampler. Check out the EWQLSO Silver edition at http://www.soundsonline.com

It’s reletively inexpensive, has it’s own sampler, sounds a billion times better than general midi, and will have quite enough to get you going.

Anyway, do some research and find out which programs will fit your needs. Some samplers and sequencers won’t work on Mac’s, some won’t work on PC’s, and some work on both.

    Good luck!

What’s really mental is the Sonar I have won’t even play the midi files I make. They play fine in windows media player, etc. But not this little program for some odd reason.

If your just looking for soundfonts: http://www.sf2midi.com/
This is one of the few sites like this left. Most people have switched to things like Gigastudio or Kontakt because the sampling capabilities are much stronger here, and can get better results. However, it’s still a good free start to use soundfonts, but you will need to dig for the good ones.

(just a side question: can Kontakt be integrated with Cubase SL [which is what I use]?)

I would think so. It would be used as a VST instrument, and Cubase accepts VST’s.
