GuestI just read that a new Mission: Impossible movie is in the works. At first this sounded like a stupid idea after the disappointing M:I 2, but with David Fincher set to direct, the new sequel might be more along the lines of the much superior original. Does anyone know if Elfman is involved?

GuestI would guess that he won’t be, but who knows?

GuestWell, anything is possible, but I doubt Elfman will get into it. I don’t think he and Fincher have ever worked together, and with the change of composers on M:I 2, Fincher could change them again and no one would care (Like the Hannible films). Besides, it’s WAAAY too early to know about that. Most composers are brought on about half-way through filming (when the director already has an idea of what the film will look like) or sometimes not even until the film is finished. Exceptions include Tim Burton and Danny Elfman (because they always work together), and Raimi and Elfman (Because they are starting to work together all the time). At least this is what I heard, correct me if I am wrong.

GuestDavid Fincher already worked three times with Howard Shore on previous films (“Seven”, “The Game” and “Panic Room”), so right now I’d say Shore could well be on MI:3
And I have no problem with that. Danny already had the opportunity to score a Mission Impossible movie. He did it pretty well for sure, but I’m curious to hear and see what Shore and Fincher would do on such a film. The pair has a nice collaboration going on (PANIC ROOM’s music amazed me at the time, despite its short length on CD).

GuestIt would be hilarious if Shore did it. Look at it this way:
Silence of the Lams:Shore
Hannibal:Zimmer
Red Dragon: ElfmanMission Impossible:Elfman
MI2:Zimmer
MI3:ShoreFebruary 16, 2003 at 10:42 am #44125Anonymous

GuestI seem to remember a comment by Tom Cruise (who also executive produces the M:I movies) that he wanted a different director and composer for all of the M:Is. Although I could have just dreamt it.
Either way, I hope it’s not as bad as M:I 2.

GuestWhy not just have Limp Bizkit score the whole film? They did a great job with the theme song on the M:I 2 soundtrack.
I am, of course, only joking. Please don’t kick my ass.

GuestWell, Zimmer really needs to choose his films more carefully. I do think he is an awesome composer, but (like alot of actors) he just gets these bad, bad movies.

Guesti will argue that M:I 2 was a good movie till I’m blue in the face. It was less in the spirit of the original Mission movies/TV because it really didn’t involve a team working together, and it looks like it’s more interested in making cruise the American James Bond. HOWEVER, it was entertaining, absurd (in a good way-pidgeons, wheelies on cycles shooting guns). i thought it was even funny too. and I even like Zimmer’s score!

GuestI guess it was alright as just an action movie. But I preferred Brian DePalma’s Hitchockian suspense as opposed to stunts and explosions (even though they were cool stunts and explosions.)

GuestMy biggest problem with M:I 2 (other than the horrid soundtrack — not the score, which I can’t really remember, just the soundtrack) was that most of the big action sequences that were even remotely cool were direct rip-offs of James Bond action sequences. I could have sworn during one of the car chase scenes that they had just lifted the footage right out of an old Bond movie and stuck it into this one — it was freaking identical.
Yeah, so the only action scene that I thought was even remotely original was the rock climbing sequence at the beginning, but it was totally pointless. It had absolutely nothing to do with the movie, it was just Cruise showboating. Really stupid.
Sorry, I hated the movie. I would almost consider buying the DVD, though, just for the brilliant parody from the MTV Movie Awards (I think) with Ben Stiller as Cruise’s stunt-double that they included on it. Hilarious.
But yeah, that would be awesome if Danny Elfman scored a Fincher-directed M:I 3, but I doubt it’ll happen.
Andrew
p.s. Thanks for kicking my ass, Knight. I deserved that (even if I was only joking).
