GuestI would love to hear some opinions on this score from people who have heard it, including comments on Danny Elfman’s contribution, but also on Michael Wandmacher’s score. How is the promotional CD? Any opinions on the film itself?

GuestI saw the movie several years ago . . . I actually really want to see it again. I don’t remember anything about the score, except remembering that I *noticed* it. I don’t know whether I noticed it in a positive or negative way, I just remember it stuck out to me. As far as the movie goes, I remember it being fresh and original and very bloody . . . which is the only thing holding me back from watching it again; I hate gore in movies.

GuestI’ll paste here my old review from the Elfman Zone. N.B. “Revenant” was the UK title.

Elfman’s music for Richard Elfman’s film Revenant presents a rather amusing interaction between Martian Madame (Mars Attacks) and Men in Black, which results in the cool, cheap’n’creepy style perfect for this film. Elfman uses groovy synths, deep bass, and solo and children’s voices. Set in LA, the storyline and characters are laughably overdone, most of the script is deliberately poker-faced with the odd funny one-liner, and Count Dracula looks like Al Pacino in Devil’s Advocate. The rest of the music scoring is by Michael Wandmacher, which consists of mainly forgettable humdrum synths together with heavy-rock songs, relieved by highly amusing abuse of classical music (Boccherini, Vivaldi, Mozart, Schubert, and most notably, Ponchielli!) and tango.
I’d recommend Elfman’s title music for a compilation disc, but wouldn’t rush out to get a disc just for the sake of hearing it: there’s nothing particularly new here. Get the trashy video instead!
Rating: **

GuestThanks guys. There is a promo floating around that is about 30 tracks I believe, and about 50-60 minutes of music. I’m assuming Elfman’s titles are on there. I think it’d be a worthwhile investment, but I should see the film first. Any further comments would be welcome.

GuestWell, the main titles are great, but I wouldn’t spend my money for the cd. The rest of the score isn’t very “elfmanish”.
Do what I did, rent or buy the video, and record the end titles!!!! You’ll get what you need.Eric

GuestIt should be out on DVD too. It certainly is in the UK (under the UK title). I’d tried recording the opening ages ago, but the beginning of the film action ruins it.Tuh! Why do they go and ruin perfectly good music by adding a film to it?

GuestThis is weird, Blunt. Elfman’s piece sounds more FREEWAYish to me than MEN IN BLACKesque.
For those who didn’t watch MODERN VAMPIRES yet, try finding the Region 1 DVD : it features a Rick Elfman / Casper Van Dien commentary that I found quite nice – one of the few commentaries that I listened from beginning to end. It’s almost funnier than the film itself, if I may say so.
