GuestIn the most recent issue of FILM SCORE MONTHLY, Elfman reveals what’s up with the mysterious credit at the end of the HULK closing titles: “Mother Theme by Mychael Danna.” Apparenly, Elfman only wanted to take half credit for the theme: the first four bars of it were from Danna’s score, but Elfman did his own thing with the later part of the theme and from then on out. Anyway, there is it. He’s very complimentary to Mychael Danna and talks a bit about why big scores like this can sometimes get the ax late in the game. He also describes the four major themes of the score and talks about how stressful writing the whole thing in 37 days (and then recording it in 14) was.

GuestI think it is the theme that we can heard first briefly in “Bruce’s Memories” and then in a more developed way at the end of “The Truth Revealed”, sung by Atlas.

Guest“they’re intsruments aren’t they, why not just use them to add different colours and textures to something totally unrelated to the whole ethnic scene??????”
My thoughts EXACTLY, elf. I thought the music worked wonderfully to parallel the tone of the story and of the Hulk himself, and never once–until I read some reviews afterward that commented on the “questionable” ethnic music–did those questions even occur to me. The musical style fits perfectly… and, in my mind, also serves to veer the movie’s tone even further from being a “typical super’hero’ movie.” On the contrary: it’s a gorgeously crafted and multi-layered drama.

GuestPeople don’t want big green monsters in their multi-layered drama! They’d rather have blondes, angels, and sailors. Craft?! Bah! All those panels were confusing. I want all vital information presented in nice little packets that don’t confuse or intimidate me.
Just a little miffed that the long-term box-office of “The Hulk” doesn’t look too promising. At least “Finding Nemo” (my favorite film of the summer and, so far, year) is raking in dough hand over fist. Maybe if those giant hulk dogs said a few wicked funny jokes, the business would improve.

GuestYou can’t hear the “Mother’s Theme”. It is not a cue. It is a piece of written music which Elfman adapted and changed into his own score.

Guestno such thing as “perfect” when it comes to music, or anything creative for that matter… it’s ALL a matter of personal preference…

GuestJeez, I you guys didn’t have to take it so seriously. I’m a Danny Elfman fan, I get exited. Of course there’s no such thing as a perfect score.
