Ok, I guess this is gonna be kind of a weird question. First off, I heard that Danny was planning on directing a movie. My question is assuming that that’s likely. Ok, what if he does make the movie, but it just totally sucks? I am a huge fan of Elfman’s music, don’t get me wrong. He’s a freakin genius in my opinion, but that’s regarding his music. Nobody here really has any clue as to how he would approach a film, since he’s never done one before, so there’s no saying how good it would be. I’m sure that everybody here, including me, has total confidence that he would do great, or at least the movie would be, but there’s always that small chance that maybe if he made one it wouldn’t be good. Let’s pretend that he did make a movie, and it really just turned out he was a horrible director, and it was proof that he should stick to doing music. Would this website still promote it, or is this strickly a film music site? How would we handle a situation like that? Now, of course if he did make a movie, it couldn’t possibly suck to the extent of everybody hating, and some people would probably love it no matter how good or bad it is simply due to the fact that it came from Danny. All I’m doing is basically throwing out a scenario, and I’m curious as to how you all respond.

    Blah blah, I’m finished.

Actually, Danny was planning to direct 3 films, if i’m not mistaken.
The first two were “Julian”, which i’ve only heard described as a ghost story, and “Little Demons”, a story about 3 little murderous children. (i suggest you go listen to the LD demos on this site if you haven’t already.) Both of these are scripts he wrote from his own ideas. He was initially planning to only direct “julian” and have some one else direct “Little Demons” but was starting to reconsider.
The third film he was hoping to direct was “undying love”, a script adaptation he wrote based on a novel . It’s a true story of a man who falls in love with a woman with tuberculosis and takes he body from her grave, mummifying it in hope of bringing her back to life.
The last i’d heard, all of these are on hold at the moment.
All that being said, if Danny will have any talent as a film director, i don’t know. I don’t see any reason why he would. No one knew if he’d make a good film composer either. He had no experience or professional training, yet he has a natural talent for it. There are other film directors who have come into the industry without experience and suceeded (Tim Burton for example). It’s true that directing and writing scores are two very different things, but so are writing songs for a rock band and writing ochestral music for a film. There are very few musicians who began their careers in a rock band who have made it as film composers. Danny is one of those few.
I would love to see Danny direct a film. If it’s good, it’s good, and if not, oh well. I would still love his work as a musician and i’d admire his ambition for attempting it, whether the film was good or not. And of course, that’s based on opinion.

Thank you for doing what was intended and giving me your opinion.

Well, It might sound mean, but I hope he wouldn’t succeed as a director. I think it’d be the worst scenario that he discovers his talent as a director and leaves his composer’s career…;-) Ok sounds pretty hypothetical…

There’s no guarantee that if he were good at directing films that he’d stop scoring them. Film scores have been a passion of his since childhood, something he always wanted to do but never thought he could. I seriously doubt he’d abandon that, and he’s always been good at multi-tasking. :)

Plus, if he scores his own films, then it’s pure ELFMAN, no middle man!
It will be exactly HOW he wants it to sound, without another director to second guess him.

That sounds like a pretty interesting experiment to me.

P.S. on a personal note (I didn’t want to waste a thread on this) I just landed a job to write and direct a commercial for our local FYE store!

Nicely done, Nat! Best o’ luck with the commercial.

I agree with you about the middle-man theory. It would certainly be interesting, but like you said, it’s an experiment. No-one really knows what he’d be like as a filmmaker, but it would be cool to find out.

    Thanks Burt!

I’m still waiting for some Pure music from Danny, but untill we get his “Symphony” I guess a movie directed and scored by him would be cool.

Part of the reason I started to make films was to score them, but if I ever got to direct a larger movie (and that’s a big IF) I’ve often thought about giving a composer (other than myself) free reign just to make that composer feel like an equal contributer to the film, and less of a wall-paper man (that happens too often today).

Well, I look at it this way: I like movies because of how their made, the plot, the characters, and all that other stuff. I don’t like movies because so-and-so made them.

And granted it’s more probably that I’ll like a movie by Tim and Sam than by someone else–but that doesn’t mean I like the movie just because it was made by them, you dig?

Case in point: I like Rob Zombie–his music that is. He made a movie, and I thought it sucked fairly bad. Okay, really bad. I found it to be very predictable, not so gory, and nothing special. So, I can seperate the two. (The whole not- everyone-shits-gold-all-the-time bit comes to mind).

It would be nice to see what Danny could do, though. I mean, I don’t think it would be horrible–he seems fairly detail oriented, and has been in the film industry long enough to know the basics. (That, and his brother’s a director so he could always get help and such).

And, even if Danny did do a movie that was terrible–well, at least then we’d know we weren’t missing anything….
