GuestI would like to know what kind of software or machine is Danny Elfman is using to create his music. Is there a way to create music with out having an orchestra and with out making it sound like a cheesy midi. If anyone can help me I will very apreciate, especially about knowing what product does Danny Elfman use. Thankyou!

The thing you want is: At least 6 PCs with Nemesys Gigastudio and the following sample libraries
-Vienna Symphonic Orchestra
-Gary Garritan Strings
-London Orchestral PercussionNovember 30, 2003 at 7:07 am #46956Anonymous
GuestOr use 1 PC with a butt-load of RAM and a HUGE Hard Drive, Gigastudio, Cakewalk SONAR 3, and with the Sonic Implant Symphonic Strings Collection (I like that one alot better) but…well, ok, this stuff is just way too expensive for someone just starting out. Here is what you can do for real cheap:
Go buy a Sound Blaster Live! Card, then get Cakewalk SONAR (they still have 2 for cheaper than 3 I think). Then you need to spend about a week scouring for decent soundfonts (but they are free so who can complain). That is about the cheapest and fairly realistsic way I know.

GuestSoundfonts … that’s what I’ve been using for about 4 years now. I’ve gotten some pretty good ones, too. You just have to look for them because there are, like, 18,000 bad soundfonts free to download and 40 good soundfonts free to download. Take my advice and DON’T look up the sample libraries they mentioned above. After you hear them, you will never want to use anything else, and believe me, that’s not a good thing. I remember the first time I head a demo of a library of that calibur (It was the “Full Orchestra” demo of Sonic Implants Symphonic Strings), and I nearly pissed myself, especially when I found out how much it costs. After that day, I’ve drooled over the expensive libraries I’d never have the pleasure of using, and soundfonts have never sounded so bad.

GuestHere’s what I’m using:
7 2.4ghz P4’s w/ 1gb DDR RAM, M-Audio Audiophile 2496 cards
MOTU Fastlane MIDI interfaces (8 with a USB hub)
2 MOTU Firewire 828 Mk1 audio interfaces for the mics
8 chanel Grace preamp (the best in the world!)
Neumann U-87 condensers (primarily….I do like my at4040’s a lot though!) (5 of them) in a M/S when I have to record live.
12″ powerbook 867mhz with 640mb DDR, 60gb hard drive, Superdrive, airport
Digital Peformer 4.0
Vienna Symphonic Library (first edition) plus performance set
My personal sampled strings from a small group session I did two years ago.
I wish I had more processing power in my powerbook, but as I often write on the go, it’s what I can carry around without getting tired…but I’m seriously looking at the 1.25ghz 15″ powerbook from Apple.
I don’t think I’ve ever written in Elfman’s style, but a lot of people call my stuff “elfmanish”, but that’s probably because I’m deeply influenced by Russian composers and ragtime. I’ll have my site up soon so everyone can hear my stuff if you’re interested…
