GuestHi!
I’ve just discovered Danny Elfman and I don’t know a lot of his work. I bet there are a lot a big fan of him here who knows a lot of his work so I would like to know if you could tell me which soundtracks he did that have a style a little like Edward Scissorhands or Black Beauty?
Thank you!March 13, 2003 at 7:40 pm #44367Anonymous
GuestTry “Sommersby” ! Its partly very sad and beautiful strings music like edward scissorhands. The “Finale” cue will make you cry! I LOVE this soundtrack!
Other people will say, Danny’s “Family Man” is very romantic, but i don’t like it this much, ’cause the music is rather average for Danny Elfman. No uniqueness, if you understand.
Another very good score is the one Danny did for “Dolores Claiborne”. Very melancholy, very sad and with delightful children choir in it. The End Titles are absolutely brilliant.
If you want to hear, how Mr Elfman sound “christmas”- like, try his dark “Nightmare before christmas”, you won’t regret it. He sings personally a few songs on this one!
These are more romantic soundtrack by Danny Elfman, but he did so much great things more! Try out Sleepy Hollow, Spiderman, Planet of the Apes, Beetlejuice, Mars Attacs, Red Dragon, Men in Black, Batman, Army of Darkness and Misson Impossible and you get a small imagination, what sort of music genius he is.
Greetings,

GuestI recommend Elfman’s more experimental stuff, like To Die For, Freeway and Novocaine.
When I first got MFADT Volume II, I always skipped over the Sommersby stuff. An epic Civil War romance didn’t sound like something I’d like to listen to. But I recently got around to actually listening to it and was surprised that I enjoyed it (particularly the Main Titles.)

GuestNice to know that I’m not the only one who likes Freeway and To Die For.

GuestFor what its worth, Knight, Freeway is one of my top few Elfman scores, hands down. You’re not alone, bro.

GuestFreeway was improvised….. so it’s not UNBELIEVEABLE… but for what it’s worth, it’s not bad at all. For a starter, i’d say stay away from freeway until you understand his style a little better…. In my opinion, his scores from 94 – 96 are great and definately have helped me appreciate his talent.

GuestI keep hearing about the score for Freeway being improvised and I’ve never understood how that’s possible.
I also agree that 1994-96 was possibly Elfman’s richest period.
