GuestHi you all! A friend of mine, working at Traxzone, just had a telephone interview with the E-man last week. You can read it at http://www.musiquedefilm.com
Click on the right, “Danny Elfman, hommes en noir et dragon rouge”.I just hope some of you understand french

GuestI just finished reading the interview, and for those who do not understand french, here’s what elfman says about red dragon:
He says he agreed composing the score for this movie, knowing that it would be in the same mood that “silence of the lambs”. He explains he has a lot of respect for Howard Shore, but will not use his themes. The music will just keep the same mood. He also points that a movie like “Hannibal” can truely not be taken seriously, and that he just ignored it… There you go….

GuestOh, yeah, I just forgot the most important thing:
His score will be more romantic, and more melodic that what Shore did for the first movie… (that sounds good, doesn’t it?!?!?!?!?!?!)

GuestAm I the only one who sings the Frighteners theme often then?
Nat: Daaaa, Daaaa, Da, Dum, Da. Dum, Da, Dum, Da, Daaaaaaa
The notes are:
G, A, Bb, G, A
G, F#, G, A, EbIn the key of G minor that is.

GuestIt’s not that the Frighteners didn’t have a “theme” Nat, but rather that it just didn’t stand out on first watching, and just doesn’t stand out as anything to write home about. At least to most people.
You’re welcome to enjoy it all you want.September 18, 2002 at 5:39 pm #42148Anonymous
Guestdoom is a great track.

GuestOkay, He says that He tried to make this score reminiscent of Shore’s SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, without copying him or anything. Reminiscent in tone, not thematics. Also, the music also goes off in it’s own particular direction, with romanticism and such. ANOTHER added bonus is that In LAMBS, Shore’s action set-pieces weren’t really BOMBASTIC and In DRAGON they are!

GuestI tried to run this through bablefish. OMG, what a hoot.
Elfman is a type setter, not a composer. And he thought only had to overcome the hummer image!
It only translated about half the text. Does anyone know how to force it to do the rest?
I could put it in 150 words at a time but there are limits to my love of Danny. The word count in that interview doth exceed my current love value.

Guestan interesting interview though he doesn’t really speak about his 2002 scores but much more about the fact that he has been really productive during these months. But still enjoyable to read Elfman’s point of view (especially his “hannibal was a joke !”

GuestIf you want to read an interview involving a somewhat in-depth discussion of his 2002 scores (Spiderman and MIIB) check out the Summer issue of SOUNDTRACK magazine.
