I have been considering purchasing the computer program MidiNotate. For those of you who are not familiar with the program, it is a program in which the user can create sheet music with an electronic keyboard and turn it into MIDI fles and one can translate MIDI files into sheet music. I have tested the trial and it seems really efficent, but I still want to find the definitive score to NmBC for an orchestra (for my musical production of NmBC). Does anyone have the score for an orchestra? Any other sheet music other than NmBC as a complete, orchestral score?

    Re. programs:

Any music notation software will turn midis into sheet music, some more accurately than others. I’ve found Sibelius is the most powerful editing and scoring wise, and if you’re going to spend money on a program, it’s the top of the range. (it’s at http://www.sibelius.com – they’ve got a demo if you want to check it out).

    Re. orchestrations:

NMBC is huge orchestration-wise…. you’re looking at 37 people in the pit if you use bare minimum strings (2fl/2ob/eng.hn/2cl/bcl/2bsn/4hn/2tpt/2tbn/tba/2perc/kbd + strings [minimum of 6vln1/4vln2/2vla/2vcl/1cb for a pit orchestra]) and that is beyond large. Have you considered getting someone to reorchestrate? Not only will you be able to hear the singers and the dialogue, but you’ll cut down on prices by not having to pay 37 musicians every show. And it’s not a swipe at Danny as he didn’t do the orchestrations for the movie either, I believe.

I’ll be interested to hear how this goes! Best of luck with this exciting project.

Thank you very much for you information and support. I’ll check out Sibelius, and I have been working on my keyboard so maybe I could orchestrate it (my family is VERY much a musically talented one). Thanks again!

No problems… if it helps, standard large orchestra for broadway pits is 2fl/2ob/2cl one doubling Bcl or sax/Bsn/2hn/2tpt/2tbn one doubling tba/2perc/kbd/6vln1/4vln2/2vla/2vcl/cb which takes you back to 29.

Another combination that works really well as a chamber ensemble is fl/ob/cl/bsn/2hn/tpt/perc/kbd/one each of the strings which takes you to fourteen, and you can add instruments from there (I think there’s a tuba solo in one of the songs, so you may need to use that). This gives a full sound without lots of instruments.

It’s also possible to double instruments, typically –

    Flute: Piccolo
Oboe: Cor Anglais / Soprano Saxophone
Clarinet: Bass Clarinet / Alto Saxophone
    Bassoon: Baritone Saxophone
    Trumpet: Fluegelhorn / Piccolo Trumpet
    Trombone: Bass Trombone
and of course the keyboard can do Celeste and Harpsichord sounds (there’s a bit of that in the score) and Accordion for Sally’s song.

    – as the need arises.

Hope this helps, and sorry to all those who had to endure the musical mumbo jumbo.

Whoops, gave you a bum steer here: the big orchestra I gave you is actually a standard large opera orchestra, rather than music theatre… the difference is in the woodwind parts which are as follows (one player each part):

Reed 1: Flute, Piccolo (Opt. Alto Flute)
    Reed 2: Clarinet, Flute
    Reed 3: Clarinet, Bass Clarinet
    Reed 4: Oboe, Cor Anglais
    Reed 5: Bassoon

and the rest are as above… you can reduce the violins to 3 firsts and 3 seconds, but that’s the least and not the best.

So you’re looking at 26 players…. and I’m not going to bother the board anymore with this, I promise! Good luck

I PERSONALLY RECOMMEND FINALE 2002 OR THE NEW UPDATE FINALE 2004. YOU CAN PERSONALLY WRITE MUSIC BY HAND OF MOUSE OR HOOK UP A MIDI PLUG AND USE AN ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT TO WRITE. IT HAS SO MANY FEATURES, I GUESS THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED THE WORLDS BEST MUSIC NOTATION SOFTWARE. SEARCH FOR IT IN GOOGLE, I THINK THE WEBISTE IS http://WWW.CODAMUSIC.COM . GO AND CHECK IT OUT, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Check out the latest issue of Keyboard Magazine, it has an article about both Finale and Sibelius Notation programs (kind of a consumer reports article), and make your own choice.
