If you can get a hold of the Farewell VHS (I think it’s on DVD now, too), the Insanity video is at the end, along with Little Girls (I believe).
*note how I loathe to give out mis-information, hence the (hesitance).

    What’s the Insanity vid. like?

why, the insanity video is.. insane.
stop motion animation follows a monkey through narrow passage ways with doll particles strewn everywhere. there is even a doll with half a platic body, half skeletal structure. there are shadows of voodoo folks following various moving dolls and figures, a chorus of doll heads missing their eyes, and three adrable little girls chopping up dolls with butter knives that are stained with blood-like rasberry jam. the whole thing ends after the monkey is finished torturing a cloth doll, (..cut you open with a knife and find your sacred heart.. : monkey pulls little tedy bear from dolls chest.) the monkey decide to dive inside the doll and he goes all the way through!

oh, and the singer guy’s in it, too.

lexi: now, what was his name again?

Oooh! Must have videos! Must have videos! I will check on Kazaa and see if they are available. Must have videos! (BTW, I have the Farewell VHS, granted it’s a copy, but none of the videos are on there…just very SMALL snippets of “Gratitude” at the beginning)

::humble bow:: it was a bit of a rushed work, too. i wanted to be the first to write it!

you all should go out and fetch the farewell on dvd. all the backstage stuff is always fun! unless that stuff is already on the vhs.. the other bonus is you can quickly skip past “mary” without waiting more than two seconds! (someone named mary is offended..)

i think insanity is my favorite video.. oh wait! DMP! and little girls! aw, i guess the only one i can say i don’t love is ‘stay’. (ducks another blow, this time not just from mary!) the midgets are neat and avila with a real base.. oh that reminds me! i don’t really like just another day’s video either. maybe if they digitally added a goatee.. maybe..

lexi: opening up a new topic of discussion about fave boingo videos, and maybe an argument about worst boingo songs.

I like the Insanity video too–just because I’m glad other people know what dolls do when no one is looking….and I’m not overly fond of the song “Mary” either.

Thanks for that description match girl. I’ve always wondered what it was like. . . I wish I could see it soooo bad.

I love “Mary”! How can you say such a thing!

I don’t like “Mary,” because it’s too…”Beatles-influenced.” Yeah, I don’t like the Beatles, not one bit. There’s no “one best band in the world.” Although I like Boingo, and think the group presented an underappreciated genius, I’m not going to proclaim to EVERYONE that they’re the greatest thing since Nabokov. The Beatles – or any band flaunting drug use – as high art? Please! Granted, their first songs were tuneful and somewhat catchy, but (and I’m talking about the later years) if you have to rely on drugs to create “art,” then I’ve got news for you: that ain’t it, baby.

A group of guys collectively smoking weed and doing acid, and then scribbling down “lyrics” on a piece of paper, or fiddling around on their instruments IS NOT ART. I like Kerouac, but his writing isn’t art… it is just a bunch of (very good) drug-and-alcohol-induced incoherencies in prosaic and poetic form. Case in point: if I write a really fantastic piece of microfiction while I’m hopped up on caffeine, as much as I might want to claim it as art, I know that it isn’t. In my addled brain, art isn’t truly so until the “artist” has made a conscious decision to put it in its final form. I’m not saying that each piece of music, literature, visual art, etc, has to be slaved over, but rather that art is so because it is a reflection of consciousness as it appears in an unaltered mind. (Not “heightened consciousness” (sp?), as drug-induced highs are often called). What makes humanity beautiful is not perfection, or the attempt at perfection, but rather the conscious manifestation of its imperfections, using innovative methods in conjunction with unaltered minds. (And yes, I’m a militant anti-drug proponent. Don’t ask why; you won’t like what you hear).

Uh…I just downloaded and watched “Stay.” Well…(pauses, thinking of something non-caustic to say)…Avila’s overly cheesy facial expressions made me laugh. Actually, the entire video made me laugh, but not necessarily for good reasons. 1) Danny’s “dancing” looked incredibly forced…almost as bad as mine! The “Farewell” dancing is great, but this…looks like the director was pointing at him during the shoot, and saying, “Dance, monkey, dance!” while Danny was thinking, “You want me to dance? Fine! I’ll dance; get a load of this!” *Whips into crazily out-of-sync hand motions* 2) High-water, pleated pants, complete with a belt. *Cough* Enough said. 2.5) The “gangster moll” in the beginning, and gangster theme throughout. I like the theme in Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal,” (yeah, I know, I’m ready for the onslaught), but it just doesn’t work with the normally “geeky” look of Boingo. 3) Derby hats. Derby hats flying through the air. Derby hats flying through the air to the approval of the bartender. Danny didn’t look right in a derby hat; I missed his lovely red hair!
3.14159…) Danny’s lips looked wacky – like the makeup artist had too much coffee or something. Here’s hoping “Little Girls” is better…

hmm.. i agree with both erikas. someone should have told coke-freak danny (new barbie expected out in time for christmas,) that he was good enough without it and ‘we did it there’ just wasn’t that great. (well, i’m not saying it was too bad either..)

i don’t like mary because.. two reasons, i don’t like the way it sounds (good reason!) and i have a grudge against it for alomst ruining the farewell concert by ruining the little red boy’s pre-pubescent voice.

same match girl, just didn’t get to finish my sentence. now, as for stay, the forced dancing was unnecessary, i agree. the boy already does more hand gestures than an italian homosexual, (is danny italian? ar ar.) erika #2, go forth and fetch little girls!

lexi: looking over this post, i see three very bad things were said, and i hope people laugh…

I was actually at the Who Do You Want To Be video taping in 1983. At the time, I was a 14 year old Boingo Fanatic! They played a secret show for members of their fan club at the Country Club in Reseda, California, as the Clowns Of Death. It was a warm up show a few days before they played the US Festival. After the concert they asked the fans to hang around for the video. It was just them playing on the stage and Danny was wearing a pink flower print dress. There was one scene where Danny is body surfing on the crowd of fans and the fans rip off his dress. I managed to keep a peice of the fabric from the dress as a momento. I even managed to get in a few Benny Hill head taps on Danny’s forehead while he was being held up by the fans. Unfortunately, they never released the video, but I know there’s video footage out there, somewhere.

    Mr. E
That is so cool! I would love to get hold of that footage! I saw the Clowns of Death one time at the Palace. No drag momentos though.
Oh, I remember being a 14 year old Boingo fanatic.

Mr. E and Beth – you guys are lucky beyond compare (well, at least in terms of Danny/Boingo experiences). Danny was wearing a dress?! Redheads wearing pink (even though I despise pink clothing) do look oddly attractive :-)

I became a Boingo fanatic when I was 17 – unfortunately, after the Farewell tour :-( Ah, yes, I have vivid memories of stomping upstairs to my room the summer after high school graduation and cranking up “Who do you want to be?” on my crappy stereo, waiting for the sweet revenge enacted upon my mother with her yelling, “Turn that crap down!” Loud horns, fast guitars, and a singing Elf are good sedatives for teenage angst – well, they worked for me, and look at how I turned out! (On second thought, don’t think about that one…) *Grins*

Hooray! Danny’s got the ‘fro-and-suspenders in the “Dead Man’s Party” video, and you know what *that* means… ;-)

oh… see, i thought you were talking about the mega fro that i hate. blech. see, the dmp is a mini-fro that we see again in the early ’90s. it’s those pictures in boingo alive that make me run away screaming. (once i ran to you..)

    L..
exi- who had an amelie haircut until it grew and she put red streaks in it…. only time will tell.

Hey, I like the fro in Boingo Alive…it’s my favorite of all his hairstyles (which really just revolve around how often he gets his hair cut). I know most people don’t like it, but hey, it’s at least something interesting to look at…

-E (the “Private Life” haircut and Danny-look is just awful…Bartek looks cool reveling in his geekiness, though)
