About my Grammy news post, we are supposed to be praising Danny and hoping that he wins and you’re over here giving each other a damn vocabulary lesson!!! Never mind…I’m just getting a little carried away. NOW OSCAR NEWS!!! Well, its a sad year…Danny sure as hell wasn’t gonna get nominated for “MIB2”, even though he was for its predecessor. “Red Dragon” was really good in my opinion so maybe that should have been a contendor or “Spider-Man” at least. At least he got the Grammy nod! But, come on, let’s face it, Mr. Oscar got nothin’ on Old Mrs. Grammy. OH MY GOD! GUESS WHO WAS NOMINATED AGAIN?! Well, you all know. John Williams…*sighing*, yea, I know. His 42nd…FORTY-SECOND… nomination. Spelled with a four and a two. So hes gonna win. I’ll bet my testicles on it that hes going to win. Who cares about Philip Glass for “The Hours”? Nicole Kidman in all that make-up does not work! Her nose is the size of my foot, LITERALLY! Thomas Newman (Road to Perdition) is a pretty good composer. Elliot Goldenthal (Frida) is very good, after “Final Fantasy”, he was on my map. Elmer Bernstein (Far From Heaven)…what was the last film he scored? I think it was “The Age of Innocence”. And, of course, what would any Academy Awards ceremony be without…Williams…*grrrrr* for “Catch Me If You Can”. Great movie, funny, nice pace, music was nothing to yell and scream about but you know. Well, till the next award show with a category for this very non-mainstream genre of music, Bye-bye!

It’s funny how people go on and on about how all John William scores sound alike and are too saccharine and big, but yet when he does something like Catch Me If You Can that is far removed from his Harry Potter and Star Wars music, his music then becomes “nothing to yell and scream about”).

And film music by it’s very nature is mainstream, it’s only when music is devoid of the film that it becomes a fringe hobby. And the Academy (composers) must consider how the music works with the film when making their choices. I can defend every one of the selections this year (which is more than I can say most years).

Can we help it if Danny Elfman’s music overpowers the movies? ;-)

Psst, I’m listening to John Williams’ Tuba concerto right now, don’t tell anyone – if you want to talk about non-mainstream music, MODERN CLASSICAL – now there’s an underappreciated non-mainstream category.

Nat (yes, I like Williams, and I’m proud of it, I only happen to like Danny more)

Mr. Dantz…it was a figure of speech (hee-hee). And for the record, I don’t totally abhor John Williams. I own both Harry Potter scores and the Star Wars Soundtracks but i own many more Elfman CD’s.

Why do all the movies that are never even released in all the theaters and some weve never even heard of get nominations? Most of the time other movies WAYYY surpass in greatness over the winner!
