GuestElfman was the only one from Big Fish to get nominated this year. He better damn well win (although it’s probably going to repeat what happened on The Golden Globes).

GuestI loved Howard Shore’s ‘Return of the King’ score, but I’ll be rooting for Elfman not only because his ‘Big Fish’ score was brilliant, but Shore all ready won for ‘Fellowship of the Ring’.
By the way, why was Shore nominated for ROTK? I thought his score for ‘The Two Towers’ was deemed “illegitimate” because it contained similar material as FOTR. Must be something behind that.
But overall, ‘Big Fish’ was snubbed all round… and I haven’t even seen it yet. But thank bloody goodness that crappy borefest Cold Mountain didn’t get a Best Picture nod. But I’d want Renee Zellweger to win anyway. It’d be a compensation for her loss last year for her role in ‘Chicago’.
P.S. – she’s hawt.

GuestThe score has to be at least 51% Original if it’s based on music from a previous film.

P.S. if the movie (Big Fish) has any fans among the voters, we might see it win for best score just because that is the only way it can be rewarded. Otherwise it’s Howard Shore’s trophey to lose (and I think he deserves it). But Danny should win for writting the second best score this past year.

GuestDoes anyone think that it is weird that Randy Newman’s “Seabiscuit” was not nominated? I was really surprised.
Of course, I think “Big Fish” should win.

GuestRandy Newman would not allow “Seabiscuit” to be submitted after he and director Gary Ross had a falling out late in postproduction. It is even rumored that Ross hired a whole bunch of orchestrators to finish the score using Newman’s material.

GuestThis is good news, although I think the Academy has a serious problems with watchable movies like Big Fish. I’m glad to see that Pirates of the Caribbean got a bunch of nominations, it was really enjoyable. I’m upset that onice again they have overlooked Tim Burton, and it really saddens me that John August wasn’t noticed. He really wrote a great movie from a short book. Oh well, maybe this year, Danny Elfman’s hard work will finally win a major award. Good Luck, Danny!

GuestYou know, I honestly think Danny should win for best score. It is, in my opinion, the truly best score of the year, let alone the best out of the nominees.
But, alas, I am saddened because I know he will not win.

GuestHoly cats! Of all the people that could have been nominated for Big Fish, Danny Elfman was? Great friggin’ day!

GuestI remember reading a long while back that Elfman doesn’t even like going to the Oscars, but prefers the less glamorous awards shows (“where they announce the winners ahead of time.”) If on that fateful night we actually see him pull up on the red carpet, I’ll be surprised…and thrilled, as it means that even he thinks he has a chance.
If I was a betting man, though, I’d probably aim towards Finding Nemo (or maybe Cold Mountain, but I never saw that, so can’t be sure)

GuestI just think these people are shutting Burton out on purpose. Big Fish didn’t get SQUAT! – except the score, of course. But c’mon…art direction? Screenplay? Depp’s the man, but Jesus – there’s nothign for BigFish in the actors category, either…For Sure i’ll be rootin for Elfman’s work…although chances are (fill in the blanks)

GuestI’m not shocked by the lack of Big Fish in the nominees list. It’s not the kind of movie they nominate. (Doesn’t mean it didn’t ROCK, but there’s that Oscar-type film, and Big Fish ain’t it.) For the “lesser” awards, I would have to say it was honestly beaten out in the categories of costumes, art direction, cinematography, screenplay, etc. It was sweet, it was fun, it was cute, but it was also on a level slightly less demanding than LOTR, M&C, and the others.
As a fan of B.F., LOTR, M&C, and POTC, this is going to be a FUN year to watch! I remember, about 3 years ago, I had zero interest (even as an intrepid filmmaker), due to a lack of my favorites among the line-up…but I’m going to be all over this one. Phone off the hook, porch light off, maybe even a “No Trespassing” sign! Feb. 29!!

GuestAlso, where is Crispin Glover? I believe he deserved the Oscar this year for his work in “Willard,” but of course I didn’t expect to see his name there.
I’m happy that Elfman was nominated, but disappointed that others in the Big Fish crew were not. It doesn’t surprise me though that the best movie in decades would get by-passed in the Oscar race.

Guestand of all things, it’s a story about the Hollywood craft – which IS to tell a story. And they snub it….i don’t get it.
If at all, I even found the message of LOTR to be utterly useless in comparison to the message in Big Fish. Big Fish’s use of a ring was better woven into the storyline, i think. I just couldn’t find myself relating to a ring with magical powers…the only things that comes close to it would be greed, and i’m not a greedy person, so it flew by me. AH there you go – This is why LOTR ranked top film at the Oscars! Ha ha.January 28, 2004 at 11:44 am #47872Anonymous
GuestI’m sure he’s gonna get it, this time. First of all, this is the only nomination for big fish. Then, all the other composers have already won, (Thomas Newman and American Beauty, Gabriel Yared and English Patient, Howard Shore and LOTR, James Horner and Titanic)… I mean, why would they nominate him if they don’t want him to win…
Yes, yes, I remember the year he got nominated twice, and didn’t get anything… But that was his first time… Then, remember that the academy used to hate him because he was so “unusual”… Well, we muss admit that Elfman has changed a little bit since 1997, and that he’s more than popular now…
Let’s hope…Eric

GuestRemember that composers nominate for the score catagory, but everyone votes for the winner.
