Does anyone know what intrument Elfman uses in his Planet of the Apes score that features the 3 notes ascending in pitch. It’s some sort of wooden percussive sound. You can hear it throughout the entire score, and within the first ten seconds of the Main Titles. What is it? I’m writing a percussion piece and would like to incorporate that sound.

Elfman used it on it’s own sometimes and sometimes mixed it with an anklung or another percussive sound to convey this “wooden timbre” that you percieve. At first, I percieved it too. In truth though, it’s more complicated. It’s horse hair pulled intensely and digitally masked.
