Brett Ratner is apparently in negotiations to direct a sequel to GET SHORTY… Wonder if this is an Elfman project or one for the Schif..

I am a huge fan of both Get Shorty and any other Elmore Leonard book, and I was very excited to hear that Be Cool (the sequel) is going to become a movie.

But then I heard Ratner was attatched to the project. That was disappointing.

I don’t mean to sling mud or anything, but I think Ratner is really over-rated. Most of his movies are derivative studio crap, although I did like The Family Man and Red Dragon (one thing about Red Dragon though, I watched it with director’s commentary and he kept saying things like “My editor actually directed this scene” or “This scene was my production designer’s idea”. And watching interviews with the members of the cast and crew, they always talk about his enthusiasm for the project, but never mention his talent.)

It is my belief that Be Cool should be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. It seems Leonard and Sonnenfeld are a good match (Get Shorty, Out of Sight, Maximum Bob).

I understand this probably isn’t going to happen and Ratner probably will direct. In this case I actually think Lalo Schifrin is a better choice for the music than Danny Elfman (Schifrin’s style just seems more appropriate.)

Actually, I think David Holmes (Out of Sight, Oceans 11) would be the best choice for music.

Lalo Schifrin is good with the jazzed-up feel that would have accompanied “Get Shorty”, but I think Elfman needs a chance to try this new style out. As has already been mentioned on this board, his leitmotif style linked to an epic theme has taken a change as of late. He’s trying to stretch out, rather than resting too much on the superheroic march.

And not to be a snot, but Sonnenfeld didn’t direct ‘Out Of Sight”.

Barry Sonnenfeld produced Out of Sight. He also produced Maximum Bob, a short-lived but brilliant TV series based on a Leonard novel. It just seems that, with so many Elmore Leonard adaptations, the ones that Sonnenfeld is involved with are the best.

There’s a series coming out this fall that’s a spin-off of Out of Sight called Karen Sisqo. Sonnenfeld isn’t involved, but it is produced by Danny DeVito who also produced Get Shorty and Out of Sight. So, who knows.

Also, it would be interesting to hear Elfman do a jazz-themed score. It certainly is something he hasn’t done extensively, but probably could do well.

Couldn’t agree with you more on that point Bart! :-)
