Guest“Well, I don’t want to crush people’s childhood dreams, but the original film is sappy,” Burton says. “It’s sappy when it shouldn’t be sappy and it’s weird. Let’s just say it’s not one of my personal favorites. I’d rate ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ much higher.” — Tim Burton
I love Tim so much, i agree with him 100%

Guestthat’s interested, I’d have to say I also agree. Here’s also more to your little article you found….
Burton says he’s wanted to do Willy Wonka for years. “I responded to the children’s book [Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory] because it respected that children can be adults, and I think adults forget that. There can be darkness and sort of foreboding. Very sinister things are very much a part of childhood. I like that sort of humor and emotion put together.”
Burton has cast his pal Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. “I just like working with him. He’s always surprising and fun,” said Burton on Depp.
*sigh* teenagers, always only giving you half the story

GuestYou two letting the age argument go for the afternoon?
July 24, 2004 at 6:49 pm #51497Anonymous
GuestThis teenage argument has happened before. Remember a while back when there was a thread that got something like 40 responses because a teenage girl made a post? Everyone here gets so worked up. I’m a teenager (15) and I’ve been coming to this site for something like 2 years now and I’ve found that this site is dominantly occupied by teenagers. Therefore, it is not wise to bash teenagers here.
Now, as for the topic that this thread was intended to discuss, I’m surprised that Tim Burton of all people found the original willy Wonka weird. Then again, his normal is most other people’s weird, so it’s like some crazy opinionated thing…I’m tired.

Guest>I’ve found that this site is dominantly occupied by teenagers
Yeah. That and composer-wannabes.

(Not to forget the notoriously cranky board-members like me who’s job it is to piss everybody off.)

GuestWait wait wait…why in the world does anybody care about the ages of posters on the board? The first post in this thread was good enough–I don’t think it deserved any bashing, and it could easily have been posted by someone twice her age without my noticing. Why the hostility? This coming from someone who’s been lurking and occasionally posting here for four years, since I was fifteen…

GuestBeets me. I’m 18 AND a composer-wannabe
, but I haven’t gotten any flack about it yet (or have I? I can’t remember).July 25, 2004 at 4:16 am #51520Anonymous
GuestWhat is a composer wanna be? Either you write music, or you don’t…or in some cases copy other people’s music and call it your own… (Now THAT I would call wannabe), or keep on using your music over and over again for different projects … (HACK*horner*COUGH!!!)

Knight (hehehe)
July 25, 2004 at 4:41 am #51522Anonymous
GuestWell, I am a composer, but I’m not making money at it (yet?).
July 25, 2004 at 5:32 am #51526Anonymous
GuestYea man! No more teenager bashing! We all grew up on his music, thats why. Everyone on this board knows if your around 15 or 16, even 17, that the first action movie you saw was “Batman”, okay? We were introduced to Elfman’s music from damn near birth.
WHOOOO!!!! lol I’m such a cornball lol.
July 25, 2004 at 6:51 am #51532Anonymous
Guestum, so yeah….Willy Wonka and stuff. heh…
July 25, 2004 at 7:34 am #51536Anonymous
GuestDo people really care about the age of people on this board? If so, I should let you all know that I’m only three and I’m still pooping my pants.

Guestlmao ernthead
Dantz: That just means that you are not a PROFESSIONAL composer yet. But you know, burn a CD of your music and sell it to your mom and TADA! Your a professional composer!

Guestit means it would have been funny if it wasn’t NOT funny
(laughing my a** off)
July 26, 2004 at 4:48 am #51567Anonymous
Guestso basically you are all laughing at me because I still poop myself? I thought this was a board where people cared about me, regardless of my age. Now I’m going to have to cry myself to sleep on my Telatubbies pillow.
July 26, 2004 at 6:14 pm #51583Anonymous
GuestTelatubbies are friggan scary

GuestI am not a fan of age bashing, but it is REALLY obvious, to me anyway, when a teenager is posting. Granted, I’m a teenager myself (only for about 6 more months, thank god), but I try not to act too much like one as I despise my own age group. Nothing makes me want to vomit more than high schoolers. And that’s putting it nicely. And the only thing that bothers me more than high school is the way TV and movies romanticize it, like it’s some kind of gritty, adult world . . . when the truth is, at that age you still live at home with Mommy and Daddy, and you’ve got adults telling you not to run, to pick up your trash, and basically holding your hand as you begin your journey to adulthood, which is still years away. For crying out loud, you can’t even buy a ticket to an R-rated movie!
So, yeah, I think age matters.

GuestWell I am a composer and NOT a teenager

I am 30 and not sure what a “composer-wannabe” is- I leave it up to others to judge the music that I write but don’t take much stock in it. You either write or you don’t and you either do it for commercial or personal reasons. I do it for personal reasons but wish to be able to support myself fully off of it financially.
As for the age thing, I wouldn’t think that would matter since this is a board for Elfman’s music. Obviously we all like his work so does it matter really how old or young you are?
I didn’t see anyone else post links to their work so will be the brave one –
July 27, 2004 at 7:47 pm #51609Anonymous
GuestI don’t link to my music because I think I suck right now…maybe after I get my Giga machines up I will….maybe….
But I’m no Danny Elfman that is for damn sure. If you look around at some other threads jjm, you can find some links to the composers who post on this board.
Knight (Who still wants to hear the music that Danny wrote for his wedding)

GuestSO ANYWAY!!!
Sorry, Tim, but I liked the original film. The only thing I’d do to it is CUT THAT BLOODY “CHEER UP CHARLIE” SONG OUT!!! Sorry…I just HATE that song. Otherwise, Gene Wilder’s deadpan reactions to the horrible tragedies awaiting these kids as they get sucked up, bloated, thrown out, and miniaturized is hilarious, and there is an ironic darkness to it — the whole factory is a colorful mess while devastation is possible at every corner and Wilder acts like nothing is wrong. Far more sinister, in my mind, than a character who would actually react to danger.
Having said that, I still plan to see Burton’s version. Many times, if it’s good.
I’m 29.
