I’m going out to California this coming April and I couldn’t be more of an outsider (although I may become assimilated if I get accepted into Cal State Long Beach). I’m wondering if, while I’m in L.A., it’s possible to get into any of the recording studios and sit in on a scoring session for whichever composer it may be for. I’ve always wanted to see a scoring session for myself, and it would be the highlight of my trip if I could do that, way ahead of going to Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash in Westwood but not behind potentially running into Danny at a Starbucks. It would also benefit my career as editor-in-chief of my school newspaper, as it would provide me with the juciest of stories. For any Californians or Ryan, who seems to have connections, any suggestions?

You’d probably have to be the guest of someone invited to the session, or have a friend involved with the production. When I visited L.A. my friend Chris Tilton got me into a LOST scoring session, which was great. However, it’s difficult to take people into the session if you don’t know them because they are fairly serious ($$) and if that person ends up being an ass it’s not the composers you have to worry about! Studio execs, directors, producers – all can flip out because of bad behaviour.

Hrm, kinda sucks that it’s so hard to get into one of these things, although I’m going to attempt to e-mail John Ottman (he’s very good about responding) and see if it may be possible to get into the “Superman Returns” session. I mean, the film opens in June, so wouldn’t April be the prime scoring time? I’ll give it a try and let you all know how that goes.

I think he got banned or maybe just stopped visiting there. My friend was supposedly a roommate with a guy who was friends with Ottman. Maybe if I lived in L.A. i’d try to see if I could get into an Ottman recording session but it would still be a long shot.

January 21, 2006 at 2:50 am #56267Spider-FanParticipantWell, I appreciate all the help, but my trip to California has just been cancelled. Or at least postponed. See, the intention was for the trip to be a college visit and revreation beyond that, but I won’t be taking the SAT until May, so April will be used for studying and the trip will most likely be moved to the summer (granted my SAT score is up to Cal State standards). Who knows, maybe Danny will be working on “Charlotte’s Web” and I can weasel my way into the recording studio.
January 21, 2006 at 6:52 am #56268strongballsParticipantThat’ll be great and good luck
