GuestI bought RED DRAGON on DVD today for Danny Elfman’s commentary. The film I thought was, OK, but nothing spectacular. Of course, I can’t turn down the opportunity to hear Danny Elfman comment on his work, so I sprung for the DVD (isn’t Universal nice, pricing the widescreen 2CD set at $30).
What a disappointment. Elfman speaks infrequently (rarely over music cues, which is nice for crooks, ahem, I mean “fans” who want to rip the tracks off the DVD) and when he does, sheds little light on what he was thinking when he wrote the score. I would have liked a little info on his choice of orchestration, a comment or two on a few select cues (the “Main Titles” for one) or even a little on how he came to score the film (I know, Brett Ratner, but let’s hear it from Elfman himself!). Speaking of Ratner, his “untitled student film” has me wondering why I’m here writing this post, and he was almost directing a $200 million SUPERMAN movie. I’ve got home videos that exibit more filmmaking craft and story then his NYU film. That’s NYU folks. How the hell…!?!?
I should note that the original soundtrack album is the best representation of RED DRAGON’s score. The cues on the isolated DVD track do have volume changes, but the real meat of the score is on the soundtrack album.

GuestNow that you’ve said that, Ryan, I think I’ll just rent it.
Mind you, I wasn’t really looking forward to the flick that much anyway, except for Elfman’s contribution, but whatever.
Thanks for the tip.

GuestWell then, I suppose I shouldn’t be too disappointed….someone bought the Red Dragon dvd for me, and I was all excited! But then it hit me that it wasn’t the Danny commentary one….
Still, I have no money, and it was free and all, and super-nice of my friend….so, it’s not like I was gonna complain or anything. (My poor, mis-guided friends have no clue as to who the hell Danny is). So, I suppose for once I was lucky, and ain’t missing much….

GuestBut I love Elfman’s little comment on the love scene!

GuestEvil Dead — the outside packaging doesn’t list the commentary, but it’s there.

GuestJeff Bond wrote a wonderful article in Film Score Monthly a few months back in which Elfman recalls how he rescored the titles to make them more effective and how he invited Anthony Hopkins to conduct a cue.

GuestHahahahah. Sorry Robert R. Some of your posts are just hilarious.
I’m guessing you mean – “The volume isn’t the same as in the soundtrack, but is it still worth the listen? I hope it’s in 5.1 Dolby surround sound (or something to that effect).”

GuestWell, I’d say it’s a good rental. If you already know you love the movie, and want to watch it over and over again, I’d buy it. Other than that, the commentary isn’t the best thing in the world, but I’d say it’s worth a watch one time through. He does say some pretty interesting things.

GuestYes, well, I am a little slow….thought it may’ve just been in the fancy expensive one.
