GuestI saw that in several interviews…and I find that incredible beyond words. He can play like, what, 20 instruments? not to mention sing beautifully and quite perfectly…not even considering the actual WRITING process of music and composition…that just absolutely astounds me. Did he really never have a teacher of any sorts? not even for theory? :p

GuestI’ve never had a music teacher either and now i am 18 and i can play clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, oboe, english horn, alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, soprano sax, trombone , baritone, trumpet, tuba, mallet perc, piano, guitar, bass guitar and the theremin. I also taught my self enough theory to write music and then took a more in depth class , but having a rock back-round like Danny has he was always around it and the other musicians.AllI play very well and often I do like back horn gigs a such in NYC and around the shore. So , after my little boasting , yes it is possible to play all those instruments and play them well. :-)Now i am majoring in music at NJCU in the fall. I am also a very accomplished ( more then the others mentioned above) musician on clarinet , t-bone , bass clar. and piano.

GuestHe’s had no formal training, but I don’t think that means he’s never had a teacher of any sorts. I think he’s probably studied music extensively, just not in the “conventional sense.” As he’s said in a few interviews and commentaries he got his education at the neighborhood movie theater where he grew up.

Guestlol I’ve been taking formal lessons (in general) since I was about 7, and am planning to be a music major. I guess I was just never really good at teaching myself anything. I need to be shown before I can do anything myself. That’s pretty sad.
I hate it.July 14, 2004 at 3:40 am #51192Anonymous
GuestStephanie,
That’s incredible! You even play the theremin! Just had to congradulate you, not everybody can play so many instruments (are you a self-taught thereminist?).
Best Regards,

GuestMan, it’s not that hard to do; you just gotta be open to it. Lose your fear of it. And let’s not bust out with that Otto Octavius speech

GuestDylan ,
I did tech myself the theremin. I bought a book and a video , i also built it myself. It was way cheaper then buying the Moog Modle which was like 300 bucks. I spent 98.00 which is very reasonable.

GuestHe tried taking lessons as a kid, but failed at them. So technically he had a few lessons, but he still taught himself everything he knows.

GuestHow do you teach yourself to play music?
I wanna do that. I’d love to composer my own music when I become a filmmaker.
Does anyone know how?
