GuestI’ve got this awesome (real young) orchestra teacher at school who would leap at the opportunity to play something a student arranged, and when he heard me playing Edward Scissorhands on my cello he was like, “what is that?…I know that…” and I told him and he was like, “OH!! right…man, I’d LOVE to be able to play that in here…” and he mentioned wanting to do TNBC if we did Danny Elfman in our class, and I would LOVE to arrange the end credits for our group…but it’s been really difficult doing the whole thing by ear. There are so many little things that he does with it that if you can’t hear when you’re writing take away a lot of effect from the piece…and our group consists of violins, violas, cellos, and a few bases. Does anyone know or have any tips on how I can make this whole arranging process a little easier or better? Or better yet…where I can get my hands on the score and just buy a copy? Because we could combine with the band to play it full orchestra…and that would be awesome.

GuestScores usually can be purchased on Ebay, Amazon, etc. As far as arranging a piece, its a toughy, you actually have to listen to soemthign several time prior to arrangeing to know where everythign is, then try and find all of the different voices or instruments in the piece and work with it. Find your higher instruments first and write them down, and divide your high and low parts into different instruments groups when listening to it. I hope i helped some, arranging is a difficult thing to do, especially if you want to please alot of other people.

GuestHeya!
Grab a copy of the piano-vocal score and work from there… they have copies around. Try http://www.sheetmusicplus.com, they usually have even the most obscure items.
Are you doing this by hand? If so you’re a braver man/woman than I. By the way, you’re not alone on this one: when I was at school, I arranged for our string orchestra too (I did a classical overture from pop themes that they are still playing, two years out.)
Good luck with this… but do make sure if you’re going to perform, you get clearance from ASCAP… so you don’t get sued!

Guestyeah, I’ve got it, the only problem is that in the end credits some of the pieces are in different keys….making it that much more complicated. lol they would actually sue a high school? Even if the program said music by Danny Elfman, arranged by me? I think that’s a bit ridiculous that anyone who even had the power to sue us would be at our school’s winter concert in Maryland :-p

GuestYeah, you’ve gotta be careful though… every now and then, ASCAP sends emissaries to highschools to make sure they aren’t skimping on royalty payments (it happened at my school, just before I did my arrangements)… so just be careful. You probably will get the rights, if you contact ASCAP. But yeah, with all the talk of piracy etc., they will sue at any chance they have.
Good luck again…
